SEAMEO Special Webinar on International Day of Education





 

Bangkok, Thailand: The SEAMEO Secretariat successfully conducted a Special Webinar on International Day of Education under the theme 'Changing Course, Transforming Education' on Monday 24 January 2022 at 09:30-11:30 hrs (GMT+7/Bangkok Time) with over 15,832 viewers during live session on the SEAMEO Secretariat YouTube Channel.

The SEAMEO Secretariat Director, Dr Ethel Agnes Pascua Valenzuela, highlighted in the welcome remarks that given the mandate of SEAMEO “we are working with 11 countries in Southeast Asia to promote cooperation in education, science and culture in the region. So, we joined the international community in the celebration of the International Day of Education aiming to shed light on how education has been transformed by the pandemic especially in the implementation of internationalization programmes, internship programmes and academic mobility.”

Dr David Atchoarena, Director of UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning, Germany, gave the keynote address that although the pandemic has affected learning in higher education around the world, the UNESCO particularly supports international mobility and inter institutional cooperation in higher education through the global convention which enabled seamless movement. In addition, Prof Lee Chi-Kin John, Vice President and Provost, Education University of Hong Kong, shared his personal view on the impacts on curriculum and instruction under the COVID-19 pandemic that the schools in Hong Kong transform from traditional offline courses to online courses to support students to continue their studies at home, so that students can “learning never stop”. Mr Leslie Loh, Founder/CEO, eduCLaaS, Singapore reaffirmed how the pandemic has delivered the silver lining to digitalize education toward becoming a global common good for delivering inclusive lifelong learning for all.

At the first session “transformation in TVET academic mobility programme”, the speakers from STIKI Malang (Indonesia), Politeknik Merlimau-Melaka (Malaysia), and Duy Tan University (Vietnam) shared their initiatives on the implementation, outcomes, challenges, and recommendations of mobility programmes during the pandemic, in which the students exchange transforms from offline to online mode. Likewise, the speakers from Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (Indonesia), University of Muria Kudus (Indonesia) and Pangasinan State University (Philippines) highlighted the best practices for transforming in teacher education academic mobility programme”.

Over the 2-hour live streaming, viewers, specifically educational institutions in the field of TVET and higher education, could benefit from insights and best practices on how students could be empowered to gain social mobility and good jobs, and how students could very well contribute their skills and talents in the region for regionwide stability and economic development through the new-normal academic mobility programmes. In addition, viewers could acknowledge the future plan of SEAMEO transforming academic mobility programme for TVET and teacher education.
