Collaboration for Enhancing Teacher Education and Training between Southeast Asia and Japan





 

Bangkok, Thailand – The SEAMEO Secretariat, in collaboration with the University of Tsukuba, Japan and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) Japan, successfully conducted the 10th SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba Symposium on 10-12 February 2022 with over 19,000 participants on YouTube live.

This year, the 10th SEAMEO-University Tsukuba Symposium with its theme on “Teacher Education in the Past, Current, and Challenges for Future” and the sub-theme on “Reimagining Teachers Education in the New Normal Post COVID-19” aimed to provide a platform to showcase the best practices of teacher education and training in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic as well as to identify opportunities and policy changes and way forwards for “New Normal” in teacher education and training institutions.

The Symposium was virtually presided over by the honorable H E Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Education of Singapore and SEAMEO Council President, and welcomed by Prof Dr Kyosuke Nagata, President of the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and Dr Ethel Agnes Pascua Valenzuela, Director of SEAMEO Secretariat.

This 10th SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba Symposium was scheduled for three days from 10 February until 12 February and consisted of six Panel Presentation Sessions with altogether 29 honorable speakers from the National Institute of Singapore, UNESCO TTF, UNESCO ITTE, Department of Education of the Philippines, SEAMEO Regional Centres, University Partners, and the University of Tsukuba. The Symposium has deliberated on various themes on pre-service teacher education, and in-service teacher training for K-12, TVET, Higher Education, Language Education, Cultural Development, Special Needs Education, Lifelong Learning, and Innovative Education Platform.

Form the closing message of Dr Valenzuela, the Director of the SEAMEO Secretariat, she hopes that the SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba Symposium will be continued and served as a platform to discuss solutions and strengthen capacities in ensuring the continuity of learning and sharing between Southeast Asia and Japan, in particular, 1) Academic and Best Practices Exchange, 2) Professional Exchange, and 3) Student Academic Mobility.    

The Symposium was conducted successfully with the live participation of 19,989 participants during the 3-Day Symposium and a total number of 68,760 views (as of 25 February 2022) on the SEAMEO YouTube Channel.

The University of Tsukuba is one of the active SEAMEO Affiliate Members who has contributed to the development of Southeast Asian education, particularly in Science and Mathematics Education and Teacher Education, since 2009. As a part of the 20th Anniversary of the Center for Research on International Cooperation in Educational Development (CRICED) under the University of Tsukuba, the Symposium was organized back to back with the other interesting events, namely, Asian Pacific -Tsukuba International Conference (AI for Educational Research), Symposium on Holistic Education: Implications for Southeast Asian Countries, International Cooperation Development in Mathematics Education (ICDME), and MEXT-Tsukuba Inter-University Exchange Project.
