2018 SEAMEO Language Online Courses - Bahasa Indonesia

Background

As the largest archipelago country and 4th largest country in the world with total 250 million populations, Indonesia well-known with its diversity and multicultural society. Indonesia has approximately 300 ethnics that has their own cultural and language. Until 2018 there are 742 languages. However, Indonesia has a motto called “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” means unity in diversity. Indonesia believes that Bahasa could be an instrument to unite its diversity that they have. Nowadays, it has been proven that Bahasa is one of the glue to unite religion, ethnic and racial diversity in Indonesia. People from Sabang until Merauke are united by Bahasa.

With the existence of ASEAN Economic Community, there would be greater and higher demand for countries in Southeast Asia to cooperate in terms of economy. Currently, Indonesia has 42% of total population among ASEAN market. Indonesia government also wants to create greater cooperation with countries among Southeast Asia as it stated under President Joko Widodo goals. Hence, it would also create higher demand for students in Southeast Asia to acquire abilities towards speak Bahasa to enhance the cooperation between Indonesia and other countries among Southeast Asia.

Presently, SEAMEO Secretariat would like to introduce a new programme named “SEAMEO Language Online Lecture Series” that would provide basic knowledge about Bahasa and how to learn simple conversation in Bahasa for students among Southeast Asia. This programme would be implemented with an online basis. There will be 8 sessions, with 1.5 hours for each session. In the end of the training session, participants must submit their final assignment in order to show their ability.

 

Objectivities

  • Introducing Bahasa Indonesia to enhance cooperation among SEAMEO member countries
  • Develop basic skills and knowledge about Indonesia
  • Acquire basic conversation that would be beneficial for daily life and casual conversation
  • Participants would be able to get a glimpse of Indonesia’s culture from the traditional culture until pop culture.
  • Participants would be able to understand Indonesia by acquiring Bahasa, since Indonesia uses it as their main language.

  • Participants must be able to provide laptop/notebook/ smartphone/ computer (with Webcam and external microphone) since this training would be an online base training.
  • Participants must install Cisco WebEx on their device and attended the session fifteen minutes prior to the session.
  • Participants have to fill the registration form first in order to be able to take this course.

 

Assignments

Assignment from each session should be submitted one day prior to the session. Therefore, the instructor could give a feedback regarding your assignment. Homework would be send after the session through email.

 

Competition and final award

For the final assignment participants must create either short video or short essay. Herewith the requirements for final assignment. Please kindly select one out of two.

  1. Final Assignment video should at least contain:
    Individual (maximum 3 minutes)

      • Mentioned 2 places, time and food or drinks.
      • Closing statement

Group (maximum 5 minutes)

  1. Final Assignment 150-250 words:
      • Create a short story
      • You should mention at least 2 family members or friends

Criteria for final assignment

  • Creativity: Related to the topic and storyline
  • Pronunciation (for video): how the participants pronounce the words
  • Grammar and vocabulary: Related to their structure
  • Punctuation: Related to the interval and how the participants pronounce it.
  • Tone: related to the expression and emphasizing on several words.

 

Certification

Certificate of Completion is provided for those who submit their final assignment. However, for the winner they will get one additional certificate. The certificates would be signed by SEAMEO Secretariat Director, Dr Gatot.

 

Evaluation and Feedback

After the studies, all the participators will be invited to participate in an online survey. The questionnaire will be delivered to the participators by e-mail with links. The results of the questionnaire will improve the future courses and programmes. The personal information and the data will be protected.

Background

Chinese has been promoted gradually nowadays. It is the trend that more and more people started to learn Mandarin and try to understand the Chinese culture. This course is a brief introductory course for the beginners. The course content will contain the basic phrases and sentences for the conversations on the topics of travelling, shopping, etc. More importantly, this course tries to hand over the students the regulations and principles of Chinese language, which can support their further sustainable self-study.

After each lesson, there will be assignments for the students to practice and review the content. At last, there will be a competition for the students participated in this course.

 

Objectives

This course tries to help the students learn these capabilities in the language:

  1. A capability of recognizing and using the Pinyin
  2. A capability of understanding the basic regulations of Chinese characters’ writing order.
  3. A capability of having short daily Chinese conversation, especially for travelling
  4. A apability of understanding the regulations and custom of Chinese language for their further sustainable self-study.

The participants are welcomed to ask inquiries and to discuss through the e-mail and Facebook group: “2018 SEAMEO Online Courses – Mandarin”. The main external contact person for all the inquiries is Karen Ngai (karen@seameo.org).

 

Assignments

The assignments after each lesson may ask the students to do different exercises and practice: handwriting paper, reading paper, video recording, and etc.
The assignments should be directly submitted to the instructors and will affect the award in the final competition. After receiving the assignments from the students, the instructors should mark the assignments and give feedbacks or comments.

 

Competition and final award

After all the lessons, the participants are invited to take the final competition as a review and presentation of their achievement. The due of submission of the competition material will be 29 July 2018.
The competition will focus on the daily dialogues and the content taught in the lessons. The participants will be asked to make a short video to present their capability in the Chinese language. The participants can make the video individually or in a group no more than two persons. Here are the requirements for the competition video:

Background

Thailand is a country with one of the biggest diversities in the world. Many places, towns, cities in Thailand are waiting to be discovered, explored, and enjoyed by foreign tourists. However, for those activities to be fulfilled, the Thai language is strongly recommended for a full potential experience that any foreigners could have.

Learning The Thai language will be beneficial to everyone who wants to cruise their journeys in Thailand. Experience, convenience, and a lot more will be gained just from learning simple conversations in Thai. Not only learning the Thai language will maximize your enjoyment, but it will also allow you to guide your friends to attractions or famous places across the country!

WebEx (Training Platform Software) will be used to conduct the course. The course will be conducted around 2-4 hours (2 days) per week.

After the courses, students should learn:

  • Simple Introduction in the Thai Language
  • Commonly used Thai phrases in conversations
  • Conversations and vocabularies related to tourism

Background

In the era of globalisation and regionalisation, Southeast Asian nations have made huge efforts to strengthen their comprehensive multilateral relationships and deepen a mutual understanding amongst countries in the region. Therefore, it is becoming absolutely essential that, besides English, learning another language of Southeast Asian countries is really beneficial to many of us.

The Vietnamese language is becoming a popular choice for many learners in the world owing to different reasons. Learning Vietnamese will open doors to work in significantly developing and deeply integrated economy. Vietnamese is also the main communication method to interact with more than 90 million people as well as a key to explore the beauty of Vietnam in all aspects. Knowing Vietnamese, thus, can bring a lot of incredible benefits.

Vietnamese The Basic is an online language training course introduced by SEAMEO Secretariat with a view to providing the essential knowledge of the Vietnamese language and culture. The course will provide learners with the foundation knowledge and skills of Vietnamese language usage, and the basic understanding of Vietnamese history, culture, lifestyles and people. Moreover, the course aims to guide and equip learners with the ability of self-studying.

Vietnamese The Basic is a free 8-session weekly course for learners from all over the Southeast Asia. Each session will be conducted in two hours every Tuesday and Thursday. The training course will be carried out on the online platform - Webex.

 

Objectives

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • make greetings, self-introduction, a basic daily conversation in Vietnamese,
  • read Vietnamese texts,
  • understand the different features on Vietnamese culture,
  • apply the language skill for survival in Vietnam,

The course starts from 2 July to 26 July , 2018. It contains 8 lessons. Each lesson will be delivered in 2 hours from 09:30 to 11:30 Bangkok Time (GMT+7) through Webex Room.

Rules of course & conditions

  1. This is a fee-free online course.
  2. All learners must be present at Online Meeting Room (Webex) at least 5 minutes before each session begins.
  3. Learners who are not able to attend need to email the instructor in advance.
  4. All learners are required to complete all assignments, and hand in them to instructor before the deadline.

 

Completion and Award

The overall academic results will be examined according to the criteria listed in the following table:

Final project 40 %
Total 100 %

To pass the course, students must achieve at least 50% in the total mark.

 

Certifications

Students who pass the course will receive “Certificate of Completion”. A student who achieves the highest score will be awarded “Certificate of recognition”. The result will be posted on the website on August 6th, 2018.

 

Evaluation & Feedback

After the course, all the participants will be invited to participate in an online survey. The questionnaire will be delivered to the participants via email attached a link. The results of the questionnaire will improve the future courses and programmes. The personal information and the data will be protected.
