New Opportunities for Health Research in Southeast Asia
Ansgar Schaefer, SEA DREAM Head of Programme, SEAMEO Secretariat

The Developing Research Excellence and Mentorship in Southeast Asia (SEA DREAM) Programme is set to transform the regional health research landscape by fostering collaboration, leadership development, and innovation.

Implemented by the SEAMEO Secretariat in partnership with regional stakeholders, Wellcome, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, SEA DREAM is designed to strengthen the research ecosystem in Southeast Asia by funding high-impact research consortia on current and emerging health priorities that are critical to the region.

With its funding call expected to launch in the second half of 2025, SEA DREAM will support multi-country research consortia for a minimum of five years to generate evidence and discoveries that can be translated into policies, solutions, and interventions across Southeast Asia and globally. These consortia will address critical discovery-based health challenges below:

  1. Infectious diseases
  2. Mental health
  3. The impact of climate change on health
  4. Public health systems

SEA DREAM will fund institutions that are committed to nurturing research leadership and providing career development opportunities for emerging talent. A focus on equitable partnerships and contributions to an ethical research ecosystem across Southeast Asia will be as important as ensuring that research outcomes are impactful for communities most affected by emerging health priorities.

Are you ready to be part of this exciting new chapter in Southeast Asia’s health research?
