Dear Parents, did you know that the way we communicate and nurture our children significantly impacts their confidence? Recent studies reveal that parenting styles and communication patterns within the family play a crucial role in shaping a child’s development, especially during adolescence. In Indonesia, children are defined as individuals aged 0–17 who require comprehensive support—not just from their family, but also from the community and environment. With this support, children can grow and thrive optimally.

In both urban and rural areas, most parents tend to adopt an authoritative parenting style, which combines affection with discipline. This approach allows children to express their opinions, although the final decision remains with the parents. However, this method is not universally applicable as each family operates within unique circumstances and environments. Consequently, the implementation of this approach needs to be adapted to the specific conditions of each family.

In urban settings, this parenting style often undergoes adjustments to suit the challenges and demands of the environment. Recent research highlights that open communication and parenting styles that give children a voice (known as the authoritative style) positively impact their confidence. This type of communication helps children feel more comfortable expressing their opinions and participating in family decision-making. Although there are subtle differences between teenagers in rural and urban areas, the findings offer valuable insights into how environmental factors influence family dynamics.

Influencing Factors: What Shapes Parenting Styles and Communication Within Families?

Several factors influence parenting styles and communication patterns in families, including the child’s gender, the mother’s age, the extent of the child’s social media usage, and the father’s occupation. Parental education levels and cultural backgrounds also play significant roles in shaping their approach to parenting. In urban areas, communication between parents and teenagers is often more open, encompassing sensitive topics such as politics or religion. This openness encourages teenagers to voice their opinions and engage in family decisions. In contrast, rural settings tend to favour less open communications, avoiding taboo topics, which can result in children feeling less inclined to express their views.

Why is This Important for the Future of Children?

Parents, let’s reflect on the parenting styles and communication methods we practice at home. Fostering your child’s confidence can begin by creating space for them to share their thoughts and engage in family discussions. This approach will help them develop into confident individuals better equipped to face challenges. While there are minor differences between urban and rural adolescents, these findings underline the significant influence of environmental factors on family relationships. Together, let’s recognise and embrace the critical role of parents in shaping a resilient and independent future generation.
