SEAMEO Council President visits Malaysia and Singapore

Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Council President and Minister of Education, Thailand, H E General Dapong Ratanasuwan, visited Malaysia and Singapore from 10 - 14 March 2016 as part of his mission in overseeing SEAMEO ™s work on education, science and culture in SEAMEO Member Countries.

In Malaysia, H E General Dapong and his delegate visited SEAMEO Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (SEAMEO RECSAM) in Penang where he delivered a speech and awarded prizes to young scientists taking part in the 10th Regional Congress on Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists (SSYS).

In his speech, H E Dapong expressed his admiration for the good work of the all SEAMEO Regional Centers and Network. He emphasised that as the world is facing many challenges, scientific innovations are needed to eradicate poverty and enhance economic growth. Additionally science has to be compounded with environmental work, morality and ethics. Teachers should therefore mould students to take part in scientific study and projects to improve their attitude on problem-solving and interest in general science and technology.

While in Singapore, he visited SEAMEO Regional Centre for Language (SEAMEO RELC) and opened the 51st RELC International Conference 2016 with the theme œTeaching Literacies - Emerging Pathways and Possibilities in Language Education .

In his opening speech, he applauded SEAMEO RELC for its groundbreaking English language teaching programmes over the years benefitting teachers in SEAMEO Member Countries while at the same time foster collaboration and relationship. He also emphasised the role of language in the 21st century as not only mere communication tool but also in promoting mutual understanding. This is particularly important as the world is becoming increasingly complex, and regional integration like ASEAN taking place. Effective language skills is key to dynamic educational adaptation in fast-changing environment which includes science and technology, globalisation, and labour market change.

On the efforts of revitalising teacher education which is one of the new SEAMEO Education Agenda 2015-2035, he emphasised on extending it on continuous language teaching improvements.

Accompanying the SEAMEO Council President in the visit was SEAMEO Secretariat Director, Dr Gatot Hari Priowirjanto, officials from Ministry of Education, Thailand, and SEAMEO Secretariat.
