The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers

(Virtual) 5 October 2022 - The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Secretariat, in collaboration with UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau for Education (UNESCO Bangkok), Thailand, organised the Webinar in celebration of World Teachers’ Day 2022 with the theme “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers”, which reinforces how teachers have the most crucial role in reimagining education and are also leading the charge in recovering learning losses while navigating a post-pandemic landscape and the dynamic changes in society.

With the aim to amplify the call for concrete and timely actions for the advancement of teachers and the teaching profession as well as to affirm and celebrate the role of teachers in the transformation of education, the webinar featured 12 invited speakers from Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE) in the Philippines, Duy Tan University in Vietnam, Education International Asia-Pacific Region in Malaysia, Google for Education in Australia, UNESCO Headquarters in France, UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau for Education in Thailand, , the SEAMEO Secretariat and other SEAMEO Regional Centres including SEAMEO RECSAM, SEAMEO RIHED, SEAMEO SEN, and SEAMEO STEM-ED.

Over 5,900 participants, consisting of policy makers, educators, teachers, students from Southeast Asian countries and beyond, attended the virtual celebration of World Teachers’ Day 2022 broadcasted at the YouTube Channel of the SEAMEO Secretariat with the peak concurrent being 1,158 views.

The webinar provided participants with a variety of practices and innovations across contexts on revitalising and fostering teacher education, teacher training, professional and personal development to boost the capacity and holistic growth of educators towards the reimagination of learning spaces. Participants also had the opportunity to witness stories of teachers from the field in transforming education in their schools and classrooms as they move forward inclusive education, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), lifelong learning, and even their own professional development, amid all the changes they have experienced, through the showcase of 22 inspiring videos on teachers’ transformation during the pandemic, including 10 creative videos selected from a total of 170 entries submitted to the SEAMEO TikTok Challenge.

The webinar has highlighted the commitment of SEAMEO and UNESCO to promoting and advocating for the transformation of education with continuous support towards the advancement of teachers and teaching profession in order to realise the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
