SEAMEO-AUSTRALIA PRESS AWARD WINNER 2001

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) is proud to announce Atiya Achakulwisut as winner of the second annual SEAMEO-Australia Press Award.

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education OrganizationSEAMEO-AUSRALIA Press Award recognizes a journalist whose work has exhibited an exceptional contribution to the coverage of education in Southeast Asia.

After deliberation over fifteen submissions by nine journalists, the jury has chosen one award winner.

The jury selected Atiya Achakulwisut as the award winner.  Ms Atiya submitted two articles from The Bangkok Post newspaper of Thailand.  The jury highlighted the quality of her writing which displayed originality, excellent investigative effort, depth and breadth in bringing out both home education and the teaching on an eco-friendly lifestyle in a submission entitled  “Home Truths”.  The article described an attempt by a local leader in the northeastern region of Thailand to home-school his children, the family’s progressive effort in prompting the community and local schools to start reforming its curriculum and approach to education; thus underscoring the need for parents and communities to participate actively to the successful child-centered learning approach in education.

Ms Atiya receives a plaque of recognition at the SEAMEO High Officials Meetings on 26th November 2001 and a round-trip ticket to Melbourne for a one-two month (6-31 March 2002) internship at the Radio Australia, the Higher Education Supplement of the Australian and other news network including free accommodation, meals at the University of Melbourne and a stipend.
