Objectives and Expected Outputs of Regional Training Course

The main objective of this Regional Training of Trainers (TOT) course is to familiarize the participants with the conceptual understanding of HVWSHE and its integration into primary and secondary school curriculum including Science, Mathematics and Social Science subjects.

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • show conceptual understanding and appreciation of the philosophy of HVWSHE with enhanced values/attitudes/interest/motivation;
  • incorporate knowledge, skills or techniques in lesson integration via various contemporary approaches :

     
* interdisciplinary/cross-curricular approaches incorporating recreational and active learning strategies;

* moral reasoning, decision making, scientific and mathematical skills, critical/creative thinking skills in understanding issues and solving real life problems;

* constructivist, contextual learning and fieldwork approaches incorporating Information and Communication Technology (ICT);

* use of technological tools to access information in various disciplines of knowledge related to HVWSHE.

  • systematically plan and implement lessons or activities for the beta-testing or micro-tryout of HVWSHE resource materials with reflection of practices, sharing and exchange of ideas and experiences;
  • develop assessment techniques and evaluation skills for teaching and learning in HVWSHE curriculum incorporating appropriate tools; 
  • acquire training and facilitation skills for echo training, programme monitoring and evaluation of knowledge and skills in HVWSHE.

The regional training course is expected to yield the following outputs with evidences of participants’:

  • Understanding of the concept and rationale of integrating HVWSHE;
  • Mastery of skills, techniques and instructional pedagogies in integrating or teaching HVWSHE;
  • Knowledge of developing appropriate assessment rubrics for HVWSHE;
  • Change of values, attitudes, interests, motivation in teaching by incorporating human values in water, sanitation and hygiene education; and
  • Knowledge of facilitation techniques for training of other teachers on HVWSHE with plans of action.

This training course is essentially activity-based and learner-centred incorporating interactive teaching and learning activities in various forms of instruction. The ten-day activity will consist of:

(1) Colloquium and plenary presentations that will cover:

  • Philosophical overview, rationale and conceptual knowledge of Human Values-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (HVWSHE);
  • Ideas of HVWSHE with evidences of fieldwork, research studies, exemplary practices: Issues and thematic strands related to HVWSHE, i.e. (i) Water and environmentally sustainable development; (ii) Water for health, sanitation and recreation; (iii) Water, human dignity and social equity; (iv) Water in culture, traditions and religious practices;

(2) Interactive input with workshops and cooperative group activities incorporating the use of ICT tools that will cover:

  • Integration of HVWSHE via alternative teaching approaches from the aspects of Science, Mathematics and Social sciences (i.e. Geography, Language/Arts, Physical/Health Education, Social Studies, etc.). These include scientific thinking skills, cross-currlcular approaches incorporating recreational and active learning strategies, reasoning and decision making skills, problem-solving and critical/creative thinking skills, issues-based approaches, constructivist and contextual learning, field studies, use of ICT tools, etc.  
  • Training competencies and assessment/evaluation skills in Training for Trainers (TOT) including echo training action planning, assessment/evaluation skills and facilitation/monitoring skills required by aspired trainers of HVWSHE curriculum
  • Planning and implementing HVWSHE curriculum including preparation of (a) assessment rubrics for micro-teaching and beta-testing of HVWSHE resource materials with report of micro-tryout; and (b) future action plans for subsequent echo training activities.

     
(3) Enrichment activities, fieldwork, institutional visits and school try-outs that will cover:

  • Literature research in Learning Resource Centre.
  • Round island trip incorporating visits to non-polluted and polluted water catchment areas.
  • HVWSHE related institutional visit to Water Treatment Plant with non-polluted water testing activities.

Visit to a selected secondary school with beta testing of HVWSHE resource materials and observation of integrated lessons.
