Eliciting Human Values in the Classroom

“Nature provides everything free of cost;

Nothing in Nature is useless, in fact it is priceless.”

Why Value Education?

•Count your garden by the Flowers,

  Not by the leaves that fall;

•Count your day by the golden hours,

Don’t remember the clouds at all.

•Count your night by the stars, not   shadows;
•Count your life by smiles, not tears;

And with joy through all your lifetime,

•Count your age by friends, not years.

Formula for success

•Be positive always
•Learn to look at only the positive
•As the vision, so the creation
•Be optimistic
•Good & bad do exist, let us learn from the not so good and take in only the good.

Moral from the Boatman story

Importance of Practical knowledge:

All knowledge gained through information/ experiences at school, home and the outside environment is useless if it is not put to practical use.

Information should lead to transformation, otherwise it is useless and a waste of time.

‘My house’ in the ‘garden of life’

The wise man built his house upon the rock,

The foolish man built his house upon the sands.

When the waves came and washed every house away,

The house on the rock did not even sway.

Everything has a Value

0 – worthless

1 – hardly any worth

2 – of very little worth

3 – can be of a little more worth

4 – sometimes useful

5 – not always useful

6 – usually kind of useful

7 – mostly useful

8 – to a great extent useful

9 – to a higher extent valuable

10 – most Valuable/ highly worthy

Value of the exercise

•No one is worthless
•Each one has his own worth
•Value does not depend on grades
•Value the value in others that we do not possess
•Critical self examination necessary to improve.

Usefulness of dry leaves

•Ash serves as an excellent manure
•Serve as fuel
•Used to make large leaf plates
•Herbal medicine
•Bird’s nest
•Life boat for creatures

The real gift of wisdom

“If a dry leaf can be of great use to man, bird and insect, how much more precious is man’s body when it is put to good use! Each one of us is most precious in this world, so take good care of the body and mind and make your life as well as the lives of others happy.”

Indirect Approach

Water, Precious Water

65-70% of human body is made up of water. Purity of Water is essential for good health.

Water Education

•Do not waste water, every drop counts.
•70 % of the body is made up of water.
•80 % of the baby’s body is made of water.
•7/10th of the brain is made up of water.
•Water is LIFE.

Water Education - English

Discuss a day when taps run dry –

•Project work
•Essay
•Debate
•Story
•Sharing experience
•Extempore speech, etc.

Water Education - Math

Three fourth of the earth’s surface is covered with water. What percentage is it?

97 % of the Earth’s surface is made up of salty water, 2 percent is ice. If the remaining is fresh, what percent is it?

Water Education - Math

The average daily consumption of a family is 500 litres out of which 100 litres is used for cooking and drinking, 100 litres for watering the garden, 200 litres for sanitation and washing. What is the percentage of daily consumption for sanitation and for wastage?

Water Education - Physics

Explain the generation of electrical energy by building a dam across a river so that the water is trapped in the form of a lake behind the dam and is allowed to fall through the pipe to turn the turbine.

Children can make models on how Potential energy/mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy.

Water Education – Biological sciences

•Osmosis
•Evaporation
•Transpiration
•Respiration
•Water as a medium for all metabolic reactions.

•Game of Discovery
•Role play
•Make puzzles and matching card games
•Make charts and illustrations about forests, deserts, rivers, etc.

Emphasize only positive values

Lessons from the Ocean

The sea never stops working. The waves ceaselessly come to the shore, depositing some dry twig, shells, or any garbage.

Be like the ocean, constantly at work, striving for purity and keeping itself clean.

Mathematical problems -1

Mother baked a cake on my Birthday. I called 12 friends home. Only 4 could come. One of them brought a dog also. If the cake was shared equally with everyone at home, how many pieces did mother cut?

Mathematical problems -2

We have 1 pail of water in the house; we collected 2 more pails from the rain. There are 7 adults at home. 2 of them volunteered to bring 1 pail each from the river nearby. Mother needs ½ half bucket for cooking and ½ for the little baby. How much water would each person get if each member in the house shares the remaining water?

What % of the water did the baby use?

Mathematical problems-3

A dealer had 72 pieces of cloth. He wanted to donate cloth to 108 poor children. It was not enough. How many more pieces of cloth does he require? But he can procure only in packs of 50 each. What do you think he could do with the remaining cloth?

Mathematical problems-4

It is Christmas time; we want to give some new toys in the sick children’s’ ward. Each toy costs P 15. How much do we need to sacrifice to be able to give toys to 20 sick children?

Mathematical problems-5

15 friends went on a picnic. It was a bright, sunny day. They decided to walk rather than take the bus to the beach. A one-way fare to the beach is 12 P. How much did they save because they decided to walk rather than take the bus?

Concepts in Mathematics

Straight line:

When you are planning to take a journey, or do any work, do not waste time; like the straight line, do not deviate from the path.

A circle

Moving in circles, we never come to an end. If a person hurts us, and we hit back, we will never get out of that vicious circle. Learn to forgive and forget. Give Love and Love will come back to you.

Concepts in Mathematics

•Addition: Add your joys, happiness, unity and friendship.

1+ 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21. Add them in any sequence, the answer is the same. We can take different paths, but the goal should always be the same.

•Multiplication: multiply your joys, love and peace.
•Division:  Do not divide your love, divide your sorrows.
•Subtraction: Subtract your fear, worries, anger and greed.

Home economics

•Two heaping cups of Patience, one heart full of Love, two handfuls of Generosity, one head full of Understanding, a dash of Humor, sprinkle with Kindness, add plenty of Faith and mix well everyday. Serve this dish with a warm heart to all you meet.

Environmental Sciences

•Theme - “We are the Forest”
•Thought for the day -

“Trees and Plants need love and care just like the baby that is growing up.”

Physics - Law of Gravity

Connect the water in two or three tanks kept at different levels. Water will flow in the downward direction (not upwards) due to gravity.

If our heads are held high with ego & pride, love will not flow to us. Love flows automatically when the head is bent in humility and goodness.

Physics - Magnetism

When two magnets are put together with the N and S poles together, they become as one with a much stronger magnetic field.

When two persons work together and help each other they can achieve much more than each one would have achieved alone.

North and South poles attract:

To neutralize a magnetic pole it is necessary to bring the opposite pole of another magnet together.

To eliminate/neutralize negative qualities, we need to highlight our positive qualities.

Physics

Law of Equal and opposite Reaction:

if you hit a table, it will strike you back with and equal and opposite force.

Life is a like a mirror - what you do comes back to you.

Biology - Cross Pollination

The butterfly flies from flower to flower and pollinates the plants so that all species will get propagated. They teach us to do one’s duty and serve whole-heartedly. Flowers cannot pollinate themselves and need the help of insects. So also, in society, we need all kinds of people, the protectors, the preachers, the parents, the needy, the rich, and the sick. We have to help each other.

Life Cycle of Butterfly

Tom found a cocoon of a butterfly & waited eagerly everyday. One day a tiny opening appeared. the butterfly struggled for hours to force its body through the tiny hole. It appeared as if it could go no further. Tom decided to help & snipped the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily. But, something was strange. It had a swollen body and shriveled wings. He watched expecting that any moment the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened. The butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and deformed wings – never able to fly.

Tom in kindness and haste did not realize that the restricting cocoon and struggle are Nature’s ways of forcing the fluid from the body into its wings so that it would be ready for flight as it emerged free from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in life. If we continued all through without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. Not only that, maybe we could never FLY!

Chemistry

•Litmus test experiments with acids and alkali teach us to always do a self test before carrying out actions, use discrimination.

Boiling point

Milk is very happy in the company of water. The combination of water and milk can be termed as Good Company. When milk boils, the water evaporates. Unable to bear this separation from water, milk tries to jump into the fire. The moment some water is sprinkled on the boiling milk, it gets pacified. Milk is happy to be united with its friend; this is Ideal friendship.
