SEAMEO-UN HABITAT Cooperation

Regional Consultations on Values-Based Water and Sanitation Education (Manila; November- December 2003)

Introduced the concept and practice of VBWSE among SEA educators

Developed the framework for the cooperative project

Set the process for adopting  the SEAMEO Declaration on VBWE

Adoption of the SEAMEO Declaration on Values-Based Water Education (SEAMEC/39,  Brunei Darussalam, 1 March 2004)

Africa-Asia Meet Forum on  VBWSE (2nd SEAMEO Education Congress, Bangkok, May 2004)

Project Goals

Contribute towards meeting Goals 5 and 7 of the MDG

Develop a new water use ethic among Southeast Asian children through the promotion of HVWSHE

Project Objectives

1.Develop competencies of teachers in selected schools in
–integrating VBWSE in their lessons
–effective use of resource materials; and

–in assessing knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviour change among students

2.Develop a set of prototype teaching/ learning materials, lesson plans, activity guides, among others, on VBWSE for use in SEA schools

3.Document experiences, lessons learnt and effective practices in introducing VBWSE in Southeast Asian schools

4.Develop a toolkit on VBWSE for project officers of the Asian Development Bank; and

5.Develop a common WATSAN facilities assessment protocol among the Southeast Asian Ministries of Education

Assessment Protocol and Database Development

Aid in advocacy among MOEs for providing safe water and improved sanitation facilities in schools through:

–Use of common and comparable assessment protocol for WatSan facilities in schools

–Development of evidence-based data on school WatSan facilities in the region

Building Capacity for Integrating  of HVWSHE in SEA Schools

Develop materials/teaching resources for integrating HVWSHE

Training SEA teachers in integration of HVWSHE in lessons

Setting up demonstration centres for HVWSHE in Southeast Asian Schools
