SEAMEO Holds Exploratory Meeting with People ™s Republic of China on Areas of Potential Cooperation

In a meeting between Dr Witaya Jeradechakul, Director, SEAMEO Secretariat and Mr Liu Baoli, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange, Ministry of Education, Peoples Republic of China, several areas of collaboration were discussed pertaining to culture, arts and sports among the youth; student mobility; mutual language teaching and learning of Southeast Asian and Chinese languages; educational quality between universities in Southeast Asia and Peoples Republic of China; and joint research projects.

The SEAMEO Secretariat Director also visited and met with Mr Ma Mingqiang, Secretary-General of the ASEAN-China Centre; Mr Yang Zhi, Director General of UNESCO Category II International Training Centre for Intangible Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (CRIHAP), senior administrators of the Beijing University for Chinese Medicine, the Beijing Municipal Commission on Education, the Beijing Normal University, the National Institute for Education Sciences (NIES). The visit to the Beijing No. 80 High School was also arranged to see a number of scientific projects and incubation of young Chinese scientists.

Several areas of potential collaboration were identified during the discussions with the administrators of the institutions such as development of resource materials that will help integrate intangible cultural heritage in basic education teaching and learning with CRIHAP; heritage protection and culture management, and promotion and coordination of regional education programmes with the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, teacher and student exchanges, and joint exhibitions with Beijing Municipal Commission on Education; research on learning assessments in Southeast Asia and People ™s Republic of China with the National Institute for Education Sciences; and special education, and student exchanges between SEAMEO Member Countries and People ™s Republic of China with the ASEAN-China Centre. The mechanism for collaboration between SEAMEO and the People ™s Republic of China will be further discussed in succeeding SEAMEO meetings.

The arrangements of the visit to the institutions in the Peoples Republic of China were facilitated and coordinated by the ASEAN-China Centre.
