Statement by
Mr George Molloy
Head of the Canadian Delegation

Mr Chairman,
Your Excellencies,
Distinguished Delegates,
Centre Directors,
Distinguished Observers,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It gives me great pleasure to be participating at the 2006 Conference of SEAMEO Ministers. I bring sincere best wishes from the government of Canada, and from the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada.
May I first of all add my congratulations to the new chair, as well as the vice-chair, upon their respective elections. I am certain that the conference will be a great success under their stewardship.
Ministers of education have a huge responsibility to their people to ensure the very best opportunities for individual development and the enrichment of social and cultural values. Meetings such as this allow us the rare opportunity to learn from one another and to demonstrate our willingness to work cooperatively together.
We have witnessed the strength of the people in the region over this past year on the rebuilding which is taking place following the December 26, 2004 earthquake and tsunami disaster. We have also witnessed the support provided by other countries to facilitate and promote SEAMEO’s assistance in the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.
Canadian authorities continue to support the work of SEAMEO and this commitment is reflected in the long-standing support and involvement of our institutions through the Association of Canadian Community Colleges and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
Canada’s systems of education are not immune to international education trends, and our educators welcome the opportunity to learn about the innovations that are occurring in other parts of the world.
Mr Chair, thank you for the opportunity to say these few words. I congratulate SEAMEO for its successes over the past year, and I look forward to our continuing dialogue at this meeting.
