Proceedings

Address by Robert Noakes
Counsellor (Education Science and Training), Australian Embassy, Bangkok, Head of Australian Delegation at the Conference

Your Excellencies,
Ministers of Education of SEAMEO Member Countries
and Associate Member Countries and observers,
and their representatives.
I would like to pass on to you the regrets of Australian Federal Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Dr Brendan Nelson, who is unable to be with us today. However, I know that Dr Nelson would want me to thank the Organizers of the 39th SEAMEO Council Conference for the excellent Organization of this conference and especially for the hospitality that has been extended to us by our hosts, the Minister of Education and the Government of Brunei Darussalam.
I am also sure Dr Nelson would want me to wish all delegates a successful and productive meeting and to assure all present of Australia's continuing commitment to the important work of SEAMEO. Australia remains committed to educational cooperation within the region and is involved in many bilateral and multilateral activities with member nations. We look forward to continued cooperation in these activities which respond to our shared educational priorities and, in so doing, provide for stronger educational links between our countries.
I would like to make particular mention of the SEAMEO – Australia Press Award which was announced at the SEAMEO High Officials Meeting on 16 December 2003. This years award was made jointly to Ms S Indramalar and Ms Karen Chapman of Star Publications, Berhad, Malaysia for their thoughtful and provocative article, School Alone is Not Enough. Ms Indramalar and Ms Chapman’s article was chosen from a very strong field of 17 articles from journalists around the region.
Ms Indramalar is due to take up her award of a 3 to 4 weeks professional internship in Australia in the next few weeks.
I am pleased to confirm Australia’s continued support for this small but valuable program.
Finally, on behalf of the Australian Government, thank you for the kind invitation to be with you today.
