Opening Remarks of Secretary Edilberto C de Jesus
Pro-Tem Chairperson, 39th SEAMEO Council Meeting

Distinguished Colleagues,
Ladies and Gentlemen
Before I formally turn over the presidency of the SEAMEO Council, let me again express my sincere appreciation for the honor and the privilege of leading the Organization and for the help and assistance all of you so graciously extended.
I conclude my service with a better understanding of the many challenges that face all our Ministries of Education in the region. Expanding access, improving equity, and achieving quality education are our common aspirations.
The goal of achieving quality education for all our children has been clearly defined by the 38th SEAMEO Council. That most regional centers responded equally to the task speaks of how they view themselves as solution providers to our many problems. The SEAMEO Secretariat must also be commended for providing the needed coordination within the organization.
Permit me also to exercise the privilege of proposing to this body one last substantive item. May I ask that the Council formally approve a resolution expressing its thanks to His Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam for his presence at the opening ceremony last night and his support for SEAMEO.
On that note and after saying “thank you” I will now accept the nominations of this meeting for the 39th SEAMEO Council President and Chairperson of the 39th SEAMEO Council Conference.
