UNION OF MYANMAR

With the enactment of the Union of Burma Board of Examinations Law in 1978, the Board of Examinations conducts the examinations in accordance with the educational policy, rules, regulations and notifications issued by the State. The Board is empowered to form local examination boards and other suitable administrative matters relating to the examinations.

The Board conducts four examinations annually, namely:

  1. Basic Education Eighth Standard Examination.
  2. Basic Education High School Examination.
  3. Special Commercial Examination
  4. Registered Lawyer Examination

Students’ achievements are assessed throughout the year by monthly, end-of-term and end-of-year examinations. These are conducted by the schools. However, there are externally set examinations at the end of each level-primary, middle and high.

The Basic Education Primary School Examination is held at the completion of the Fourth Standard and is conducted by the Basic education authorities at the township level.

At the end of nine years of schooling, a child takes the Eight Standard Basic Education Middle School Examination conducted nationally by the Board of Examinations. Based on performance in this examination, a child may choose either the science or the arts stream. The combination of subjects for the science stream are Myanmar, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A choice of combinations can be made in the arts stream. The first combination consists of Myanmar, English, Mathematics, Economics, History and Geography. The second combination consists of Myanmar, English, Optional Myanmar, Additional English, History and Geography.

At the completion of the Tenth Standard, a child has to take the basic Education High School (BEHS) Examination, a national examination conducted by the Board of Examinations. The results of this examination are published in the "A" list and the "B" list. For those candidates who pass in the "A" list, the BEHS examination serves as matriculation examination to gain access to higher education studies. Based on performance in this examination, the combination of subjects they have taken in the high school and the choice of studies they have indicated, a selection is made by the Selection Committee (composed of personnel form the Department of Higher Education and the Department of Health Manpower) to place successful candidates in universities or professional institutes. For those who pass in the "B" list, there is the possibility of joining Department of Technical and Vocational Education (DTAVE) institutions like the Government Technical institutes (GTI) and State Agricultural Institutes (SAI) and Commercial Schools. However, due to the keenness of competition for places in these institutes, candidates have to appear for a selection examination.
