INDONESIA
The Government of Indonesia
conducts three national examinations at the completion of Grades
6, 9, and 12. These examinations supplement the Final Examination
(EBTA), locally administered examination.
Continuous (formative) student
assessment is practiced widely and is the responsibility of
each school. There are several types of formative assessment,
i.e., monthly mid-term and final term examination. The results
of the formative assessment would affect the result of the final
term exam, the summative assessment.
In the case of the three national
examinations at the completion of three sectors, there is a
weight system designed to assist disadvantaged school children
in remote areas.
The entire examination system
development procedure is a vivid example of total national involvement.
Test items are solicited at the provincial and district levels
throughout the country. Teachers from selected schools are invited
to become part of item writing teams. Each team produces 50
to75 items for one of the national examinations. These items
are then sent to Jakarta, where the National Examination Centre
is and a National Committee reviews, selects and edits them.
This procedure tends to give
the examination higher credibility and gives the provinces and
districts a sense of involvement.
The use of a national examination
at the 12th grade is much less significant than at
the sixth or ninth, since the results of the national examination
is superseded by the university selection examinations.
