Appendix 2
CAMBODIA
By the end of 1975-79 region,
Cambodia's formal educational system had ceased to exist. Virtually
no trained teachers were left in the country; schools and educational
facilities had been destroyed. The reconstruction of the education
system during the 1980s was a major achievement.
The grade 9 and grade 12 examinations
are primarily used for selection for the next phase-entry to
upper secondary and preparatory, respectively. These two exams
are set nationally:
a. Lower
Secondary Level (grade 7-9)
At the end of grade 9
students must take the national examination to obtain the
certificate of lower secondary level before entering grade
10 at upper secondary level.
Students who fail the
exam can be allowed to repeat in their grade or more if enrolled
in a private school.
b. Upper
Secondary Level (grade 10-12)
At the end of grade 12;
students have to take another examination to obtain the certificate
of upper secondary level.
Students who fail the
exam are given chance to repeat in their grade and be candidates
again for the next examination.
Students who pass the
exam are entitled to take entrance examination for higher
education.
On the other hand, the Ministry
of Education, Youth and Sport (MOEYS) experiments automatic
promotion in some model schools with the hope of eliminating
grade repetition and linking it to improving the quality of
teaching.
