Appendix 1

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM


There are five public examinations which are administered at the school level. They are taken at different levels as follows:

a. Primary Certificate of Education (PCE)

The Primary Certificate of Education Examination is taken by all Primary VI pupils on completion of the seven years of primary education before the pupils proceed to secondary education when the pupils are approximately aged 11+. Based on the PCE examination results, the pupils enter the lower secondary level at Menengah I for the Level I or Level II course.

Among the 10 subjects taught, only five subjects are examined, namely 'Bahasa Melayu, English Language, Mathematics, Science and General Paper which covers History and Geography. All papers are rested in English Language except Bahasa Melayu and History. The Examinations Department is responsible for developing the question papers in accordance with the syllabuses and textbooks which are prepared by the Department of Curriculum Development.

b.   Primary Certificate of Education (PCE) (Resit)

The Primary Certificate of Education Resit examination is taken by pupils who have failed at least two subjects in the previous PCE examination.

Like the PCE examination, the examination papers for 5 subjects are prepared by the examinations Department.

PENILAIAN MENENGAH BAWAH (PMB)

The Penilaian Menengah Bawah is taken by all Menengah 3 students on completion of three years of lower secondary education when the students are approximately aged 14+. Based on the PMB results, the students enter the upper secondary level at Menengah 4 for the 'O' level or 'N' level course.

The students following the Level I programme could take up to 9 subjects out of the 20 subjects offered. Six subjects are compulsory, namely Bahasa Melayu, English Language, Mathematics, Islamic Religious Knowledge (for Muslims), Integrated Science, Geography and History. The two non-examinable subjects are Malay Islamic Monarchy and Physical Education.

The students following the Level II programme could take up to 8 subjects out of the 13 subjects offered. Seven subjects are compulsory, namely Bahasa Melayu, English Language, Mathematics, Islamic Religious Knowledge (for Muslims), Science, Geography and Science. The two non-examinable subjects are Malay Islamic Monarchy and Physical Education.

The assessment mode as well as promotion to upper secondary for Level I (summative) and Level II (formative) are different. In terms of assessment, Level I is summative form and Level II is formative form.

The Examinations Department is responsible for developing the question papers in accordance with the syllabuses and textbooks which are prepared by the Department of Curriculum Development.

BRUNEI-CAMBRIDGE G.C.E. 'N' LEVEL

This examination is a joint examination in collaboration with the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and it is meant for the students following the 'N' level course on the completion of the fifth year of secondary education when the students are approximately aged 16+. Based on the 'N' level examination results, the student enters the 'O' level course.

The examination was introduced for the first time in 1997. The students are required to take maximum of 7 subjects, 4 core subjects namely Malay Language, English Language, Mathematics and Science and another 3 optional subjects.

Basically all the fourteen subjects offered are adapted from Singapore-Cambridge G.C.E. 'N' level except Bahasa Melayu and Islamic Religious Knowledge. The question papers are designed by UCLES except our papers in national language develop by the Examinations Department.

Certificates are awarded to those candidates who have attained at least 1 'N' level pass.

BRUNEI-CAMBRIDGE G.C.E. 'O' LEVEL

This examination is a joint examination in collaboration with the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and is meant for the students following the 'O' level course on the completion of the fifth year of secondary education when the students are approximately
aged 16+. The students with adequate and relevant 'O' level passes may proceed to do a further two-year Pre-University course.

About 35 subjects are offered at 'O' level. The students are required to sit 8 subjects of which four subjects must be Bahasa Melayu, English language, Mathematics and Science. All the syllabuses and the question papers are designed by UCLES except papers in national language developed by the Examinations Department. Certificates are awarded to those candidates who have attained 'O' level standard and passes in the subjects taken.

BRUNEI-CAMBRIDGE G.C.E. 'A' LEVEL

Like Brunei-Cambridge G.C.E. 'O' level, Brunei-Cambridge G.C.E. 'A' level is a joint examination in collaboration with the UCLES. The students take this examination at the completion of two years of post secondary education when the students are approximately aged 18 and are about to enter their tertiary studies at Higher Education Institutions.

About 18 subjects are offered at 'A' level. Majority of the students take 3 subjects at 'A' level. All the syllabuses and the question papers are designed by UCLES except our papers in national language develop by the Examinations Department. Certificates are awarded to those candidates who have attained 'A' level standard and passes at 'O' level standard in the subjects taken.
