- Passion for life-long learning
- Social & Moral Responsibility
- Adaptability

Desired outcomes of education

Produce a person with qualities:

1. Socially & morally responsible person

This person contributes to well being of society. He improving the lives of the unfortunate, older persons, people with disabilities through voluntary community work. He may also initiates and runs social projects.

Being morally responsible also means living in such manner that does not harm living beings in society.

2.

Passion for life

An ideal education should inspire a person to have a passion for life.

He who has passion for life is one who gives his best in all that he does; from whatever walk of life he comes from. He gives total commitment to whatever he does.

Such a person is likely to exude confidence and a positive self-esteem, and live a very fulfilling life. He is thus well placed to contribute to the betterment of society.

This aspect of life leads naturally to a passion for life-long learning

As you know, we are now in the age of globalisation where countries and cultures are increasingly interconnected. This is facilitated by the increase use of IT especially with evolution of knowledge-based economies (e-commerce).

The result of this is that with technology advances at a faster pace, we must constantly acquire new skills for the new knowledge. Therefore it is critical that we must constantly up-grade, relearn, retrain themselves. We must embrace change in this "Brave New World."

It has been said that being illiterate today doesn't mean inability to read but it means the inability to learn, unlearn and relearn.

3. Adaptability

It follows that we must be willing to adapt in an ever-changing world in increasingly short periods of time. Adaptability goes beyond the readiness to retrain ourselves. It also means that we must be able to adopt other cultures' perspectives, and adapt ourselves to different ways of looking at the world and different ways of doing things. We must be flexible in our outlook

Education System that nurtures a person with the above characteristics

1. Curriculum

a. Academic curriculum

1)

At this point, schools are very much compartmentalised into different disciplines

For e.g. in universities – Students are very specialised in their respective disciplines. E.g. the social sciences, medicine, business, arts. There is no cross-disciplinary perspective. This limits our perspective in looking at our subject matter and stunts creativity.

We would like to see more cross–disciplinary project work. We would like a curriculum that encompasses subjects from different disciplines. E.g.: A student could take a mixture of subjects from the sciences, arts and maths for projects.

2)

At present, modes of assessment are exam-orientated.

We believe that a curriculum that is heavily reliant on exams may not necessarily help in real learning. It merely just hone memory work, exam skills instead of genuine understanding of the subject matter and application of knowledge.

Exams place a lot of unnecessary stress on students. It also kills the enjoyment out of learning.

Solution: Less weightage is given exams but knowledge is tested with different assessment modes E.g project work, roleplays, presentations etc

3) National education

We believe that students need to understand more about their country, especially in culture and history. Students need to learn why defense is important for their country and learn to love and respect their country through education. By this I mean that we need to know our roots and be grateful for our country, through national education it is hoped that students will learn to be responsible to the country.

4) Classroom teaching methods

We are still quite used to traditional classroom teaching methods. E.g.: the whiteboard, heavy reliance on textbooks.

Solution: more field trips so that lessons really come to life. To gain first hand experience.

CBL learning which is more interactive in nature compared to the textbook. This can extended to virtual classroom, digitised notepads. Simulate the environment for a more enriching learning experience.

Desired outcome: Student to think creatively

2.

Non-academic curriculum

This is vital to developing a socially and morally responsible student. In the Singapore context, there are ECAs in schools like uniform groups, sports, and societies and clubs, and community involvement.

These instil and cultivate many personal qualities like self discipline, care and concern for others, teamwork, we believe that there is scope for more contribution to society.

Community involvement projects can be extended to more countries overseas. This will make students more aware of people who are in need of help and assistance beyond their respective countries.

3)

Gracious person

This is important because being gracious means that students can learn to be courteous and sociable, how to socialize with people. They learn how to build friendships with other people.

They become constituents of a gracious society.

4)

Being proud of their culture

For example, we can look at Indonesia. They love their culture very much and wear their cultural costumes whenever they can. Students learn to be culturally rooted, appreciating their own culture. They should of course understand and respect other cultures and believe in principles of multi-racism.

Principal

1) Dynamic

Principals are leaders of the school. Hence, to lead the school and cultivate a student who is all rounded, I believe that he must be dynamic.

For example, a principal who is dynamic will be very enthusiastic in doing events, students will be inspired by him and follow his footsteps. They will learn to inspire, motivate and draw out the best from others.

2) Be forward looking.

He must be aware of the environmental and social trends so that he will be better abled to look into the future and prepare the students for it.

They must have a vision of what the school wants to achieve and be able to share with the students.

For instance, in IT, he will be able to look forward and predict whether to advance in IT or not, if he does, he can prepare the students for it.

3) Placing importance in nurturing and developing students’ character

While exams and academic learning are important, character and social skills are equally important if not more so. Yesterday the emphasis is on IQ but today many agree that success comes from EQ where a successful person is able to empathize with others. They learn to have compassion towards others.

4) Be approachable

This characteristic will give students confidence to approach the principal with their ideas.

Ideally principals and teachers should empower the students by giving them greater ownership to their ideas/projects

Eg: A student can come up with a plan for a school camp and if the proposal is satisfactory, the principal can give the go-ahead to the student.

5) Provide a caring and nurturing environment for school members

Ie: both teachers and students.

This is because with longer hours spent in school, and a large number of students being latchkey kids, a caring environment will make the students feel at home and be able to work better.

Teachers

1) Caring

Teachers have daily contact with students, so whenever students encounter problems, they can approach the teachers. Caring teachers will make the students feel comfortable in relating their problems.

2) Find Creative Ways of teaching lessons

Teachers do not just have rote learning in class, they can allow independent learning for students and let them do projects such as role-playing and self-exploration.

These will enhance the classroom activities. Students will then be able to think creatively how they want to show their understanding of the lessons.

Facilities

1)

Bigger and soundproof classrooms

By this I mean more space for group work. Having group work such as discussions within a team of students or role-playing can create learning between each other and exchange knowledge about the lesson. Students will be able to work in teams and value every contribution made. Soundproof classrooms will mean that students will have more chances of doing group work without disturbing others or having to go to special rooms.

2) IT-enhanced classrooms

By this I mean that the classrooms will be having IT facilities, like having more computers and video conferencing equipment.

Students will then be able to access to the Internet, to other countries and learn from them directly instead of relying on textbooks. They can also exchange their knowledge with students of other countries.

For convenience, control panels for computers and lighting can also be set up. What I mean is that at a touch of a button on this control panel, I will be able to switch on/off the lights quickly and can also access to students’ work on the computers.

There could be a main network through which all the computers can be connected to so that teachers will be able to relay urgent messages to the class easily and it’s a more efficient mode of communication.

3) Virtual classroom

Nowadays, technology is so advanced, students will want to study in the comfort of their homes. Students will then be able to access lessons from wherever they are.

Simulation facilities can also be provided.

For example, you might want to experience how cold is the winter in Finland, in the simulation room, you will be able to experience the coldness 1st hand without going to Finland.

4) Computerized libraries

Of course, we can also have computerized libraries for an easier source of information from the world over. It then becomes an information hub and can also be used for video conferencing and chat. Students will then have the world as their information centre and not be reliant on their textbooks.

5) Green environment

We would also want to be environment-friendly like having more greenery. This will cultivate consciousness in caring for our environment in the students.

Students can learn how to conserve and love their environment. Especially when global warming comes into mind.

6) Better physical education equipment and facilities

We believe that education is developing the student socially, morally and physically, hence a wider variety of physical education is incorporated. We can have equipment for abseiling, boxing, and sword fighting to cater to students’ different interests.
