FUTURE EDUCATION IN INDONESIA
FOR GENERAL AND VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS

By Agusno Irawan and Desi Susilowati (INDONESIA, 2000)

OUTLINE :

z The Education System
a. Formal Education
b. Informal Education
z The Curriculum
z The Teachers
z The Students
z Our hope for Future Education

Indonesia is an archipelago, where there are many kinds of natural resources and cultures. Education is an essential sector to develop our country life. Basically, the education ‘s purpose is to create a skillful human resource in accordance with business field needs. Our country has two types of education, i.e. formal education and informal education.

The formal education is education which is held in school, through teaching-learning activities. It consists of general education , vocational education, religious education and education for the handicapped. The second type is informal education held out of school without teaching-learning activities continually.

Each education group has different curriculum. The general education puts priority to general knowledge wider and improve skills of students. General education consists of primary, junior high, and senior high schools. Vocational schools focus on preparing student in understanding specific vocational skills needed by employment. Religious education prepares student in mastery of specific knowledge about religion and related subjects. It consists of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah as Primary school, Madrasah Tsanawiyah as Junior High and Madrasah Aliyah as Senior High.

For Vocational education, there are 7 points of curriculum :

1. Competency Based Curriculum puts priority to given material which can make the graduates competent in job fields.
2. Broad Based Curriculum, focused on given intellectual and emotional materials, in order for the graduates to be able to adapt to the world development continually.
3. Finishing studies, it means that the materials continue that the student can understand the studies before.
4. Studying based on experience.
5. Training based on production.
6. Individual studies.
7. Reviewing studies to be more and more successful.

In our country, teachers have an influence in forming complete students. A teacher is demanded to teach 40 students in a class. They are responsible of their tasks and have highest patience to control students. In our country, it is difficult to look for a teacher. Do you want to know why? It is because in our country teacher’s salary is lower compared to other countries in the world. They still have high spirit walking on foot to go to school, which makes us proud of them.

You should know that in our country many students wish to join a government school because the school fee is less expensive than that in a private school, but it is not easy to get them. The students have to be qualified, including getting good mark and good intelligence. In another case, youth people of Indonesia have an economic obstacle. You know, they really miss joining schools, but they don’t have enough money to support them.

Nowadays education of Indonesia is excellent, but we want it better, and this is our opinion about the future educatin :

1. We want that the number of students in one class to be at less 20 students, so the teacher can intensively teach.
2. We want many qualified teachers to handle students to improve students' intelligence.
3. In Indonesia, educational equipment does not support the student to be cleverer, so we need a cooperation from other countries.
4. We need practical program more than theory program.

  • Senior High School

The curriculum program in a senior high school in Indonesia is divided into three semesters, 4 months each. At the end of each one, there’s a semester test, and after that, report cards are given. In the first and second grade, the kids are given general subjects, totaling 13-14 subjects taught in the same period of time. In the third grade, the children are classified into 2--the natural science program and a social science program. The classification depends on their second grade third semester report card. The teachers will see their mathematics and natural science (physics, biology, and chemistry) grades. Usually each school has their own minimum sum requirements of those grades. For example, one school can ask for 24 (6.0 average), another school can ask for 26 (6.5 average) for the students to be qualified to join the Natural Science program.

The classification for the third grade has proven to be inefficient. Many students want badly to study the natural science program, but because of their low grades, they are forced to study the social one. This is making many students move to another school whose requirements are less than their school. A better way is to let them decide their own path. If the student wants to enter the Natural Science, it is up to them. But if they cannot study well because the subjects taught are too hard for them, it is their risk. Besides, learning something we want to learn is a much better way than learning something we are forced to learn.

There is a problem for the curriculum. Some students want to learn parts of the natural science and parts of the social ones, too. For example, a student wants to learn physics and geography at the same time. This is not possible because Physics is only taught in the Natural Science program, and so is Geography, only taught in the Social one. To solve this, a "self-selection" program may be used. It gives the freedom to the student to choose a number of subjects they want to learn. So, each student may not have the same exact subjects they are learning. This can be more efficient if the students are not divided into class. Otherwise, the students registers to a teacher for their class. This can also be called the "students-go-to-teachers" than the "teachers-go-to-students"

Internet should also be used to facilitate the education program. But it should not only be used by students, but also by teachers, either it is to look up on something related to their subject, or to communicate with other teachers from foreign countries. This is rather rare, because inn Indonesia internet are often used by students only.

CONCLUSION

  • Teachers

Teachers should have more attention from the government. Their own needs are the students needs too. Add more facilities to their class so they can explain more further and the students can understand better. A better qualification should have more attention also. Highly-educated teachers should be a priority than young and average-educated teachers. In this way, highly-educated ones should have more understanding of the subject and can teach better too.

Brush up the attitude. Teachers shouldn’t stick to the curriculum all the time. One period of teaching can be used for fun and games. An outdoor education is another option also. Make an atmosphere in a classroom where the students are not forced to listen and pay attention to the teachers. So don’t stick to the textbook, and improvise more from your mind.

  • Curriculum

Curriculum can be based on the students’ choice rather than a standard system which is compulsory to every student. So each student can choose their own subjects to learn, without any forced feeling to study them. There could be some subjects which are obligatory to every student to take, such as Indonesian language, civics, and also religion.

Support the outdoor classroom program. There should be a one-time outdoor program where the teachers take the students to a museum, or a field practice to test their skills. Students should do a report on their visits so they won’t think their visits is a holiday given by the school.

  • Environment

The government and local schools should give more briefing to the society about how important school is. Many parents still do not understand how important school is. They usually think if a child can write and read, that is enough. The children go to school only until elementary school, and they do not continue into junior high school. The parents need the kids to help them on housework for the girls, and help them support the family for the boys, usually helping them in the store, or work as hawkers in an intersection of a street. They do not understand that with higher education, the kids can help the parents more than just as hawkers selling newspaper in the corner of the streets.

  • Facility

Modern facilities should be put in school also. Device like the Internet is very useful for the education program. Not only can students look up on certain subjects, help them on homework, the teachers should use them too to look on the subjects they are teaching. Communicate fast with other teachers from other countries with the internet. Search websites for more information and articles that can help them while teaching in class, so the students can understand more. Improvise.
