SEAMEO-Australia Press Award 2006

Ms Karen Yap Lih Huey

The winner for this year’s cycle of the SEAMEO-Australia Press Award is Ms Karen Yap Lih Huey, a Malaysian who is the assistant editor of the Bangkok-based Asian News Network, a network of 14 newspapers across Asia.   Her article, “A Lost Generation across Asia’s War Zones,” appeared in the Jakarta Post and the Philippine Daily Inquirer. It tells the quest of Burmese refugee children for some form of education in Thailand and Thailand’s response to their plight. A total of 10 entries, mostly serial stories, from Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam are reviewed by the committee.

Ms Jan Gough-Watson, counselor for education, science and training of the Australian Embassy, headed the committee with three journalists:

1. Ms Johanna Son, Regional Editor and Regional Director, Inter Press Service Asia Pacific, with headquarters in Bangkok

2. Mr Ian Williams, President, Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand

3. Mr Kavi Chongkittavorn, columnist and assistant group editor, The Nation  

Plague of Recognition

The 2006 SEAMEO-Australia Press Awardee, Ms Karen Yap Lih Huey, assistant editor of the Asia News Network, Bangkok, accepts the plaque of recognition from Ms Susan Bennet, Branch Manager, International Cooperation Branch of the Department of Education, Science and Training, Australia,  and Prof Dr Bambang Sudibyo, Minister of National Education, Indonesia, and SEAMEO Council President, during the 42ndSEAMEO Council Conference on 13-15 March 2007 in Bali, Indonesia.
