INTERNSHIP PROGRAM REPORT
Druing 19 March - 15 May 2001

My name is Uraiwan Sangpenchan, a student from the School of Language and Communication, the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).
I enrolled the internship program and chose SEAMES as my first choice since I thought that it would be my great opportunity to have practical work experience in the intergovernmental organization. During the internship period (March 19 – May 15, 2001), I had been an intern under the professional supervision of Mr. Wilfredo O. Pascual, Jr., the Publication Officer.

Objectives

As an intern at SEAMES, my objectives are as follows:

To gain the practical work experience under the professional supervision in the workplace of the intergovernmental organization which will be the great step and fruitful for my future career;
To apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to the real working environment; and
To improve my English language skills.

Job description

During the internship period, SEAMES was engaged in organizing the First SEAMEO Education Congress on 26-29 March 2001 at Sofitel Central Plaza. Therefore, most of my tasks related to the Congress. As the assistant to the Publications Officer, my job descriptions before the beginning of the congress was to assist the Publication Officer in completing documents needed in the Congress. During the Congress, I was an assistant of convenor at meeting rooms and of staff of Parallel Sessions registration desk. After the Congress, I was an assistant to Mr. Wilfredo in compiling papers, speeches that presented in the Congress, and rapporteurs’reports to produce a website http://www.seameo.org/educongress/papers, CD-ROM, and final report. In addition to tasks assigned by the Publications Officer, I was also assigned by other professional officers to proofread and edit papers, prepare documents, translate documents, file documents, and do other secretarial jobs, for example.

Experience Gained

After finishing the internship program at SEAMES, I extremely acknowledged that SEAMES was the right place for the intern because I gained a lot of experience.

I had the practical work experience under the professional supervision of Mr. Wilfredo O. Pascual, Jr. At the beginning, my work progress was in disorder; however, I learned how to prioritize working process from him. He assigned each work step by step in a well-organized plan. Working with him, I gained a lot of knowledge and experience that will be useful for my future career.

It was my chance to apply the in-class knowledge to real work setting.

SEAMES gave me a great opportunity to participate in the international Congress like the 1st SEAMEO Education Congress. I experienced working with multicultural people and the intergovernmental working process during the Congress.

My English language skills both spoken and listening were improved. I practiced my speaking and listening skills by communicating to participants of the Congress and SEAMES staff. My reading skill was improved as a result of working on the production of Congress’s publication.

As coordinating with staff and interns of Information and Technology Office (ITO). I gained new ideas and knowledge on Computer Literacy and IT. Moreover, ITO set up a class on “Web-Page Editing” which is valuable knowledge.

I had a chance to attend the presentation of Ms. Anita Lie from Petra Christian University, entitled “the Multicultural Curriculum: Towards Education for Peace and Development” which gave me a new dimension about Cultural Influence and confirm my interest on Culture.

In conclusion, SEAMES is the intergovernmental educational organization that provides opportunity to students who want to have practical experience under professional supervision. Being an intern at SEAMES is a great and beneficial experience in my life. I have gained valuable experience that will be fruitful for my future career. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Mr. Wilfredo O. Pascual, Jr. for his beneficial suggestions about a working process and his kindly teaching.
