INTERNSHIP PROGRAM REPORT

My name is Onanong Pratakphiriya. a student from the school of Language and Communi-cation, the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA). I decided to enroll the internship program because I would like to have work experience in intergovernmental organization. During the internship period (March 19 – May 15, 2001), I had been an intern under the professional supervision of Ms. Pareena Prayukvong., the Marketing Officer.

My objectives
As an intern at SEAMES, my objectives are as follows:

• To gain experience in working in intergovernmental organization and learn working mehtod of the organization

•

To have the practical work experience and learn working with people

•

To apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to the work

•

To practice my English language and communication skills.

•

To gain experience in working with people from different cultures.
 
My job description

During the internship period, SEAMES was engaged in the First SEAMEO Education Congress on 26-29 March 2001 at Sofitel Central Plaza. Prior to the Congress, my jobs were aimed on contacting customers and the participants of the congress. I informed the participants about the change of the fee and persuaded them to join the Gala Dinner. During the Congress, SEAMES also set up the educational exhibition which all SEAMEO branches and many organizations Such as Ministry of Education from Southeast Asia participated.  My tasks in the exhibition were manning SEAMES booth in order to give information about SEAMES and the exhibition. The visitors were both Thai and foreigner. Apart from manning booth, I was responsible for being coordinator in order to observe around the exhibition and give other exhibitors conveniences since SEAMES was a host of the exhibition. I was also responsible for announcing the events in the exhibition. In the Congress section, I was assigned to assist in the parallel sessions. After the Congress, I was assigned to help intern from Canada for the development of a Project Proposal on “Rural Youth, Food Security and Sustainable Development” My task was gathering information and summarizing important data for the project. I also assisted the supervisor (Marketing Officer), the organization, and other officers in various projects such as Evaluation Project, librarian  jobs and do other secretarial jobs.
 

Experience Gained

During the internship program, I gained a lot of experiences.  Since I had no work experience, being an intern at SEAMES gave me opportunity to work in real working environment.

 
• I learned the working system and workflow within organization.  Collaboration with colleges was a new experience to me.
• I could develop communication and intercultural competence to the multicultural environment.
• In the 1st SEAMEO Education Congress, I gained experience in solving unexpected problems and applying my social skills since I had to meet both Thai and foreign visitors and many problems.
• I gained more knowledge on education in the 1st SEAMEO Education congress and I had opportunity to observe in the parallel session where participants from various organization discussed on the educational theme.
• The development of a Project Proposal on "Rural Youth, Food Security and Sustainable Development" helped me improve my computer literacy since I searched for information needed via internet.
• I gained more knowledge on rural youth, food security, and sustainable development of Asia region from assisting in the development of project proposal.
• I had opportunity to discuss with colleges, show my idea, and learned to listen and comment others' idea during the meeting on the development of the project.
• I could observed my strength and weakness when I worked in real working environment.  My supervisor, Ms Pareena kindly taught me many skills and helped me improve my correspondence skills during my inter period.
• Working in Programme & Marketing Department gave me a lot of knowledge I haven't learned from the field I have studies.
• I gained a lot of secretarial skills since my tasks involved with secretarial job.
• I gained more computer literacy since SEAMES provided us a computer course on Dreamweaver program.
• I had a chance to assist in Evaluation department in the Congress Evaluation Project which far from my current study.  I could learn the process of evaluation from this project.
 
In conclusion, working as an intern at SEAMES gave me a lot of experiences.

I could practice and apply both language and communication skills here.  SEAMES gave me great opportunity to gain knowledge from working in the intergovernmental organization.  I would like to thank SEAMES for giving me a chance to explore the new world and broaden my horizon.  I also would like to thank you my supervisor, Ms Pareena who taught me many things which will be useful for my future career.
