Background
The
SEAMEO-Jasper Research Award is an annual grant bestowed by
the Government of Canada and the Southeast Asian Ministers
of Education Organization for outstanding research conducted
by SEAMEO Member Country nationals.
The
Fellowship was established under the SEAMEO-Canada Cooperation
to commemorate SEAMEO's 25th Anniversary on 30 November
1990. In October 1990, Jasper, Alberta, was the first Canadian
meeting-place for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers. So follows the
name of the SEAMEO-Jasper Fellowship.
The
term "fellowship" could mean research grant and
has caused confusion to candidates for the Programme that
it offers an award for conducting a research, which is not.
Thus the 2002 SEAMEO-Jasper Selection Committee decided to
rename it to "SEAMEO-Jasper
Research Award" effective 2003.
Commitment
of the Research Award
The
Government of Canada awarded a Cdn$250,000 grant to SEAMEO
so that an endowment could be established, the interest of
which supports the research fellow in the dissemination of
his/her research, travel expenses to Canada and
some SEAMEO Member Countries, with health and travel
insurance.
In
addition, the winner will be awarded a plaque of citation at
the SEAMEO Council Conference.
