| Purpose
of the Internship: |
| The purpose of
this internship is to have a positive work placement that allows me
the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the international field.
In addition, the purpose of the internship is to represent Medicine
Hat College, Human Resources Development Canada and SEAMEO RIHED to
the best of my ability. |
| Description
of Tasks: |
| My main tasks
are writing summaries and editing publications. However, I have had
a variety of tasks, ranging from Master of Ceremonies at a workshop
to teaching English. My tasks are described below in the section on
My Tasks, My Accomplishments and My Remarks. |
| Accomplishments: |
| My accomplishments
are listed in the section on My Tasks, My Accomplishments,
and My Remarks. |
| Problems
Met and Solved: |
| The main problem
I have encountered is correcting the papers written by university
professors from SEAMEO member countries. I had some trouble understanding
the exact meaning of the points they tried to make, but I did my best.
I carefully read through the papers and revised the grammar and spelling
to the best of my ability. |
| Also, I have
had some problems writing the various articles because it takes time
to think of the right words. |
| Insights/Knowledge
Gained: |
| This information
is listed in the section on My Tasks, My Accomplishments,
and My Remarks, however I have listed some information
here in summary. |
| Through my work
at SEAMEO RIHED I am continually learning, particularly about higher
education in Thailand and the SEAMEO member countries. |
| Also, I know
that I need to carefully read over all information before it gets
published. |
| In addition,
I am learning Desktop Publishing using Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe
Pagemaker 6.5. It is useful for me to know these computer programmes. |
| Furthermore,
I am learning about how to communicate and interact with people from
different cultures, such as in my English classes. |
| Conclusions: |
| So far, my internship
at RIHED has been a wonderful experience because I am learning about
higher education in Thailand and the other SEAMEO member countries.
Furthermore, I am learning more about the international community. |
| Recommendations: |
| This internship
is working out very well for me. However, I suggest that future interns
know which office they will be working in prior to arriving in Bangkok.
In this way, the interns could research their respective SEAMEO centres
before starting their internship. |
| Future
Plans: |
| I enjoy the writing
and editing that I do at SEAMEO RIHED, and so I think a job involving
these tasks will be a possible career option for me. |
| Since I have
to return to Canada in September, I am going to look for a job that
involves writing and editing or a job with the Canadian (or Alberta
– provincial) government. |
| My
Tasks, My Accomplishments, and My Remarks |
| Note: All of
my tasks were assigned by my mentor, Susan Adler-Shaw, unless otherwise
stated. |
| 1) |
Task:
To edit papers from the Second Regional Seminar on Private Higher
Education. |
| |
These papers
are going to be developed into a book on private higher education;
therefore it was crucial for me to do thorough revisions of them.
So, I corrected the grammar and spelling in these English papers. |
| |
It was challenging,
but I was pleased to have accomplished my first major task, editing
the papers from the seminar. |
| 2) |
Task: To write
two articles for the RIHED bulletin: one on Canada, and one introducing
myself to the readers of RIHED’s bulletin. |
| |
I spent time
writing these articles and I enjoyed it. |
| 3) |
Task: To work
on RIHED’s bulletin (for April 2002). |
| |
I assisted Susan
in editing and designing the layout and graphics of the bulletin.
Also, I attended a workshop on Desktop Publishing using Adobe Photoshop
6.0 and Adobe Pagemaker 6.5. The information I learnt in this workshop
was useful because I applied my knowledge to the layout and design
of the RIHED bulletin. |
| 4) |
Task: Teaching
conversational English to five RIHED staff members. |
| |
Note: This task
was assigned by Dr. Padoongchart Suwanawongse. |
| |
This task, in
which I teach conversational English to these staff members twice
a week, it is an ongoing task. |
| |
This task is
useful for these people because their English skills are improving. |
| 5) |
Task: To write
several summaries for the Second Five-Year Development Plan for SEAMEO
RIHED 2002-2007. |
| |
I wrote these
summaries and I typed and edited the information for this book. I
also considered possible ideas for designing the pages. Through this
task I became more informed as to SEAMEO RIHED’s goals and plans for
the next five years, 2002-2007. |
| 6) |
Task: To assist
with the details of the Regional Workshop on Simulation for DC-DC
Converters. I edited several letters and pamphlets concerning this
workshop. |
| |
In addition,
I was the Master of Ceremonies for the opening ceremony. So, I had
to familiarise myself with the details of the workshop and write my
speech. |
| |
This task was
very rewarding because I was somewhat involved in the organising process
of this workshop and I got the opportunity to be the Master of Ceremonies. |
| |
Note: My task
as Master of Ceremonies was assigned by Dr. Padoongchart Suwanawongse. |
| 7) |
Task: Preparations
for the closing ceremony of the Regional Workshop on Simulation for
DC-DC Converters. |
| |
Note: This task
was assigned by Dr. Padoongchart Suwanawongse. |
| |
I participated
in the closing ceremonies by assisting in handing out certificates
to the participants and assisting in other aspects of the ceremony. |
| 8) |
Task: Preparations
and Teaching at the English camp in Saraburi province, Thailand. |
| |
I somewhat helped
organise and prepare the games for the teenagers who would be participating
in this camp. I, in addition to the other two Canadian SEAMEO interns,
the 3 Thai interns and several SEAMEO Secretariat staff members, went
to a rural school in Saraburi province. The six interns, myself included,
taught English to grades 7-9. |
| |
I enjoyed seeing
the smiling faces of the Thai students as they learnt English and
attempted to speak the language. |
| 9) |
Task: Revision
of the papers on private higher education. |
| |
I corrected
the grammar and spelling in these English papers again. |
| |
This task was
useful because with my careful analysis of these papers there would
not be any mistakes in these papers when they are published in the
form of a book. |
| 10) |
Task: To write
summaries for the SEAMEO RIHED annual report
fiscal year 2001/2002. |
| |
These summaries
focused on the training programmes, research studies, seminars and
conferences that RIHED has carried out during the past fiscal year,
1 July 2001 – 30 June 2002. |
| |
I spent time
careful analysing the reports concerning RIHED’s activities over the
past fiscal year and wrote the summaries. |
| 11) |
Task: To attend
the Task Force Workshop on “Tourism Programme at a Distance and On-line
for the Greater Mekong Sub-region.” |
| |
Note: This task
was assigned by Dr. Padoongchart Suwanawongse. |
| |
This workshop
took place 29 – 31 May 2002 at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University
(STOU). I was one of the two rapporteurs, taking the minutes of the
workshop. |
| |
I typed the notes
on a laptop computer, and then after the workshop the other rapporteur
and I wrote a report on the workshop. This task was very useful for
me because I learnt a lot about the GMS and gained experience as a
rapporteur. |
