Official Tours of SEAMEO Units by the President of SEAMEC 1984

His Excellency Mr Chuan Leekpai, Minister of Education, Thailand, and President of SEAMEC, undertook an official mission to the Republic of Singapore from 22 to 26 April 1984.  His Excellency made a courtesy call on H E Dr Tay Eng Soon, Minister of State for education, Singapore on 24 April.

On the previous day his Excellency had visited RELC where he officiated the opening of the SEAMEO-RELC Regional Seminar on Communicative Language Teaching.

In his Opening Address, his Excellency commended RELC, a Regional Centre of SEAMEO, which had been making useful contribution to our region in the area of language education and language development.  It had also helped to bring richer awareness of languages to the Southeast Asian people.

His Excellency's official mission to Singapore also included visits to Ministers of other Ministries, Government departments, and national institutions of learning, including the National University of Singapore.

His Excellency was accompanied during his tour of Singapore by senior officials from the  Ministry of Education of Thailand, the Thai member of the RELC Governing Board and the Director of SEAMES.

A programme had been prepared for the President of SEAMEC to visit Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam between 16 and 28 January 1985.   The programme included courtesy calls on His Majesty the Sultan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the respective Ministers of Education, as well as visits to the SEAMEO Units in Malaysia and Indonesia, namely RECSAM in Penang, the TROPMED National Centre in Kuala Lumpur, BIOTROP at Tajur, and the SPAFA Sub-Centres and TROPMED National Centre in Jakarta.  His Excellency was also scheduled to visit Sarawak in East Malaysia, at the invitation of H E Datuk Dr Sulaiman Haji Daud, the immediate past President of SEAMEC.

His Excellency's visit to the SEAMEO Units in the Philippines had been scheduled for the first week of February 1985.
