| SEAMEC PRESIDENT'S VISITS TO
SEAMEO CENTRES 1989 During the year under review, the SEAMEO Units in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand were honoured with a visit by His Excellency Mr Anwar Ibrahim, Minister of Education, Malaysia, and concurrently President of SEAMEC. The SEAMEC President also made a visit to Brunei Darussalam. The SEAMEC President visited Brunei Darussalam on 2 February 1989 where his Excellency had discussions with his Excellency Pehin Dato Haji Abdul Aziz, Minister of Education, Brunei Darussalam. The SEAMEC President was also briefed on the technical and vocational education system in Brunei Darussalam by the Director of the Institute of Technology. The SEAMEC President took time out of his official visit to the Philippines to visit INNOTECH on 13 February 1989. His Excellency was briefed on the activities and projects of INNOTECH, SEARCA and TROPMED by Dr Dolores F Hernandez, SEAMEO INNOTECH Director, Dr Arturo Gomez, SEAMEO SEARCA Director and Dr Jane Baltazar of SEAMEO TROPMED Philippines. At this briefing SEAMEO Secretariat was represented by Dr Padoongchart Suwanawongse, the Deputy Director. On 11 March 1989, the SEAMEC President visited SEAMEO RELC where he had a short discussion with Mr Ernest Lau, SEAMEO RELC Director. He also met with the Centre's administrative and professional staff and was briefed on RELC's main activities and responsibilities. On 10 April 1989, the SEAMEC President inaugurated the SEAMEO RELC Regional Seminar on Language Teaching Methodology for the Nineties. He was welcomed by the SEAMEO RELC Director and the SEAMEO Secretariat Director. The SEAMEC President made a visit a SEAMEO RECSAM on 17 March 1989 to officiate the 72nd Presentation of Certificates Ceremony where 67 key science and mathematics educators were warded Certificates of Participation for completing the requirements in their respective courses. He was met by the Deputy Secretary-General, Ministry of Education, Malaysia cum chairman of RECSAM's Governing Board, Tuan Haji Nik Musa Nik Abdullah, the SEAMEO RECSAM Director, Mr Poon Poh Kong and the SEAMEO Secretariat Director. On 11 September 1989, the SEAMEC President visited SEAMEO Secretariat and SEAMEO SPAFA at Darakarn Building and the SEAMEO TROPMED Coordinating Office and SEAMEO TROPMED National Centre of Thailand. The SEAMEC President met with the staff of SEAMEO Secretariat and SEAMEO SPAFA and had discussions with the SEAMEO Secretariat Director. He was also briefed by the SEAMEO SPAFA Director, Professor Subhadradis Diskul, with regard to SEAMEO SPAFA programmes and the proposed new SEAMEO SPAFA headquarters building in Bangkok. |

SEAMEO SPAFA Director, Professor Subhadradis Diskul, with regard to SEAMEO SPAFA
programmes and the proposed new SEAMEO SPAFA headquarters building in Bangkok. |

| At SEAMEO TROPMED
the SEAMEC President was given an audio-visual presentation of the role
of SEAMEO TROPMED in the region by the SEAMEO TROPMED Coordinator, the
Professor Dr Chamlong Harinasuta and the Director of the SEAMEO TROPMED
National Centre of Thailand, Dr Santasiri Sornmani. The President
also met with the staff of SEAMEO TROPMED National Centre as well as
the SEAMEO TROPMED trainees. The President also had a brief meeting
with his Excellency, General Mana Ratanakoses, the Minister of Education,
Thailand, and paid a courtesy call on his Excellency General Chatichai
Choonhavan, the Prime Minister of Thailand. In a letter to the Secretariat, the SEAMEC President expressed his regret and apology for not being able to visit SEAMEO BIOTROP in Indonesia in January 1990 as proposed by the Secretariat due to his Excellency's tight schedule during that month. |
