COLUMBUS, OH – COSI and ScottsMiracle-Gro are pleased to present Backyard Science Day for the third year. On Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 11a.m. to 3:30 p.m., science experts from ScottsMiracle-Gro and other partners will help COSI guests explore all there is to know about their own backyard.
"Backyard Science Day helps emphasize that everybody can be a scientist at home and explore science in the world around them," said David E. Chesebrough, Ed.D., President and CEO of COSI. "This day will be dedicated to the natural wonders of the backyard, and our key partner ScottsMiracle-Gro helps bring this all to life."
Using interactive, hands-on demonstrations, COSI staff and science experts from ScottsMiracle-Gro will teach visitors about soil, how plants grow, what seeds need to grow, how to make their own bird seed, and container gardening. ScottsMiracle-Gro will also have planting kits for kids to take home.
"The backyard is a place to feed young minds' curiosity about science and the natural world," said Bruce Caldwell, Global R&D Leader, ScottsMiracle-Gro. "Through our partnership with COSI, we are proud to once again support Backyard Science Day and inspire exploration and learning."
In addition, Dale Gnidovec from OSU's Orton Geological Museum will be on hand to identify rocks or fossils that visitors bring in from home. George Keeney of OSU's Biological Sciences Greenhouse Insectary will explore the world of insects. Decker Tree Nursery will also be passing out complimentary tree seedlings to guests.
Visitors can go even deeper with our Earthworm Dissection Workshop. Find out what makes them so important and take home a starter worm farm kit. $5 per person, reserve in advance by calling 614.228.2674.
Backyard Science Day is free with COSI admission.
