World Teachers Day, 5 October 2011

World Teachers' Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels. It also commemorates the anniversary of the 1966 signature of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers.

SEAMEO Secretariat and UNESCO Bangkok Hold Fourth Joint Meeting

The fourth regular meeting between SEAMEO and the UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education was held on 26 September 2011 at the Mom Luang Pin Malakul Centenary Building, Bangkok.

The meeting was chaired by the Director of UNESCO Bangkok, Dr Gwang-Jo Kim and co-chaired by the Director of SEAMEO Secretariat, Dr Witaya Jeradechakul. Mr Haji Mahrub bin Haji Murni, Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam represented the SEAMEO Council President at the meeting. He was accompanied by Mr Aminudin Mohd Yaakub from the Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam. Over 30 UNESCO and SEAMEO participants attended the meeting including the heads of units and key officers of UNESCO Bangkok, representatives from SEAMEO SPAFA and SEAMEO TROPMED Network, as well as key officers of the SEAMEO Secretariat.

SEAMEO QITEP in Language conducts workshop to develop mother tongue-based multilingual education

SEAMEO QITEP in Language conducts workshop to develop mother tongue-based multilingual education pilot projects in Indonesia

Responding to the various resolutions of the SEAMEO Council, SEAMEO QITEP in Language has been conducting various activities to continue the coordination of initiatives on multilingual education in SEAMEO Member Countries. The latest of which is the workshop titled "Design and Development of Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education Programme" which was conducted on 12-15 September 2011 at the Ibis Arcadia Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia which produced a set of needs analysis instruments for school principals, teachers, parents, community leaders and other local education officials who will be involved in establishing potential pilot projects on multilingual education in some provinces in Indonesia.

SEAMEO TROPMED Thailand Receives “Best Practice Award”

The Commission on Higher Education, Thailand conferred the "Best Practice Award" to SEAMEO TROPMED Thailand in recognition of its leadership in the field of tropical medicine and in appreciation of its continuing contribution to the knowledge needed to make a substantial positive difference to tropical healthcare problems in Southeast Asia, particularly through the Centre's International Graduate Program in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

SEAMEO INNOTECH Flexible Learning Tutors visit SEAMEO Secretariat

Sixteen participants of the SEAMEO INNOTECH-led "Capacity-Building Workshop & Accreditation for Flexible Learning Tutors" visited the SEAMEO Secretariat on 2 September 2011. The visit, which was part of the week-long course organized by SEAMEO INNOTECH in Bangkok, aimed to give participants orientation on the programmes and projects of SEAMEO to strengthen cooperation and connection among Southeast Asian countries on education, science and culture.

Dr. Witaya Jeradechakul, Director of the SEAMEO Secretariat warmly received the participants to the SEAMEO Secretariat. In his speech, he encouraged the participants to continue enriching their skills and in leading the region in flexible learning by integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching-learning processes in order to effectively manage the challenges facing Southeast Asian countries in the 21st Century.

Delegation from the Government of Kenya visits SEAMEO Secretariat

Six senior government officials from the Government of Kenya visited the SEAMEO Secretariat on 8 August 2011 to exchange ideas and experiences with SEAMEO on various education issues such as inclusive education, and technical and vocational training. The delegation was led by Dr Evangeline Njoka, Deputy Secretary-General, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO.

SEAMEO Secretariat contributes student scholarship and development funds to a school in Thailand

As part of the SEAMEO Community Involvement Programme, the SEAMEO Secretariat donated 31,400 Baht for student scholarship and 160,000 Baht for school development activities to Suksasongkroh Bangkreuy School in Nonthaburi Province. Dr Witaya Jeradechakul, Director of the SEAMEO Secretariat presented the cash gift to the school director, Ms Chantana Khampanya during the SEAMEO Secretariat team's visit to the school on 22 August 2011.

SEAMEO RETRAC Holds Governing Board Meeting and Commemorates 15th Founding Anniversary

The SEAMEO Regional Training Centre (SEAMEO RETRAC) held a double celebration as it convened its 14th Governing Board Meeting and commemorated its 15th founding anniversary on 10 August 2011 at the Rex Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The simultaneous activities were graced by H E Pehin Abu Bakar Apong, SEAMEO Council President, and Minister of Education, Brunei Darussalam; and H E Prof Dr Pham Vu Luan, Minister of Education and Training, Vietnam.

SEAMEO Secretariat organizes training for teachers on use of interactive whiteboad in teaching

The SEAMEO Secretariat, in collaboration with the Information Technology Project, under the initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand organized a two- and-a-half day training course on Using the Interactive Whiteboard to Improve Teaching Strategies on 23-25 July 2011 at Suksa Songkroh Bangkruey School, Nonthaburi Province, Thailand.

SEAMEO participates in 12th Regional Meeting of National EFA Coordinators

National EFA Coordinators and education officials from ten SEAMEO Member Countries and the SEAMEO Secretariat participated in the 12th Regional Meeting of National Education For All (EFA) Coordinators that was held on 25-28 July 2011 at the Sejong Hotel and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The meeting served as forum to discuss with countries and EFA partners on ways to accelerate progress in achieving the EFA goals in 2015, as well as to learn from the experiences of the Republic of Korea in improving access of its people to quality education which contributed to the country’s development.
