SEAMEO Centres Hold Governing Board Meetings for 2012

The 15 SEAMEO Centres and the SEAMEO TROPMED Network convened their respective Governing Board Meetings for 2012 at various dates and venues in the months of September and October. Each governing board meeting was held one after the other beginning 4 September until 28 of October 2012.

Almost 200 senior officials and representatives from SEAMEO Member Countries participated in the series of meetings that focused on the review of accomplishments of the Centres for the past year, and the setting of direction and drawing up of plans for the next fiscal year.

SEAMEO Gears up for Greater Online Collaboration

Readiness surveys and training workshops on web conference systems for SEAMEO Centres

More than two hundred specialists, trainers, scientists and officers from nineteen SEAMEO Units and three other institutions in nine SEAMEO Member Countries took part in a four-day series of activities that provided opportunity for participants to join various virtual meeting rooms to discuss SEAMEO projects and activities through real-time multicast communications. The 22 simultaneous training workshops were held from 10 to 13 September 2012 in 22 locations in nine countries in Southeast Asia including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

SEAMEO Centre Directors Meeting 2012

New projects firmed up, new areas of collaboration with
development partners defined

The Centre Directors of the SEAMEO Regional Centres gathered for the annual SEAMEO Centre Directors Meeting from 16 to 18 July 2012 at the S31 Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand to discuss proposals, plans and activities under the 2011-2020 SEAMEO Strategic Plan and the respective development plans of the SEAMEO Centres. The Meeting was organized by the SEAMEO Secretariat and was attended by 80 participants including the directors and key staff of SEAMEO Centres and the Secretariat, representatives of Associate and Affiliate Members, and invited partners.

SEAMEO Council President Visits Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines

His Excellency Pehin Abu Bakar Apong, President of SEAMEO Council and Minister of Education, Brunei Darussalam visited Malaysia and the Philippines on 18-22 June 2012, and Indonesia on 2-3 July 2012 as part of his round of visits to the SEAMEO Member Countries in his capacity as SEAMEO Council President. The highlight of his visit includes the signing of Enabling Instrument and Memorandum of Understanding of SEAMEO SEN in Malaysia, visits to the ministries of Education in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia; and meetings with Centre Directors and key staff of SEAMEO Centres in these three countries.

Malaysia Signs Memorandum of Agreement with SEAMEO on Establishment of Centre on Special Education

The Government of Malaysia signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization to host the SEAMEO Regional Centre on Special Education (SEAMEO SEN) on 18 June 2012 in a ceremony held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The MOA indicates that Government of Malaysia will undertake the full operational costs and programme development of the first regional centre for special education under SEAMEO.


The MOA was signed by Dato' Dr Rosli bin Mohamed, Secretary-General, Ministry of Education, Malaysia; and Dr Witaya Jeradechakul, Director, SEAMEO Secretariat. The signing ceremony was witnessed by H E Pehin Abu Bakar Apong, SEAMEO Council President and Minister of Education, Brunei Darussalam; and H E Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Malaysia.

SEAMEO Secretariat Organizes Workshop on Classroom Research

The SEAMEO Secretariat conducted a workshop on classroom research for teachers in two schools in Thailand under its SEAMEO Community Involvement Programme on 16-17 June 2012 to assist teachers identify and offer solutions to problems of students related to learning. Twenty-three teachers of Ban Subsanoon School in Saraburi Province, and 4 from Ban Pruewai School in Chaseongsao Province benefited from the two-day workshop held at Ban Subsanoon School, Saraburi Province.

Asst Prof Dr Khajornsak Buaraphan from the Institute for Innovative Learning, Mahidol University (Salaya Campus) was invited as a resource person. Through a series of activities, the teachers obtained a better understanding how a simple research with students could be conducted.

Fourth SEAMEO Executive Committee Meeting Held

The SEAMEO Executive Committee convened its fourth meeting on 28 May 2012 at the SEAMEO Secretariat, Bangkok, Thailand to tackle issues that require policy guidance such as the strategies in implementing the various initiatives under the SEAMEO-wide Action Plan 2011 to 2020; as well as administrative matters of the Organization requiring discussion and thorough inquiry.

The members of the SEAMEO Executive Committee, serving in their second year comprises high officials from SEAMEO Member Countries, namely: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam. The additional year in the Committee's term follows the change in the tenure of the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the SEAMEO High Officials Meeting; as well as the President of the SEAMEO Council which has been extended in 2011 from one to two years. This year's SEAMEO Executive Committee Meeting was chaired by Mr Haji Mahrub bin Haji Murni, Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam.

Shaping the Southeast Asian Curriculum towards Improving Science Literacy in SEAMEO

SEAMEO QITEP in Science is one of the centres under the coordination of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization that is mandated to implement programmes and activities to meet the needs of improving the quality of teachers and educational personnel in Southeast Asia; and to establish a wide cooperation network for sharing resources, information, and research and development among SEAMEO Member Countries.

SEAMEO Holds Exploratory Meeting with People’s Republic of China on Areas of Potential Cooperation

As follow-up of a wide interest from institutions in People’s Republic of China for possible collaboration with SEAMEO, the SEAMEO Secretariat visited and held exploratory discussions with the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange, Ministry of Education, Peoples Republic of China and other institutions from 16 to 18 May 2012 in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China with the purpose of exchanging views on cooperation in education, science and culture as well as other topics of common interest.

SEAMEO Shares Initiatives on Vocational and Technical Education to Ibero-American Countries

At the invitation of the Organization of Ibero American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI), SEAMEO shared the current status of vocational and technical education and training in Southeast Asia during the OEI’s Conference on Vocational and Technical Education from 23 to 24 April 2012 at IBEROTEC, Lima, Peru. The conference focused on the processes of change that are required and/or are occurring in vocational and technical education, with special emphasis on approaches, strategies, policies and tools to consolidate these processes. It was aimed at building a platform for dialogue and exchange of information on the progress, experiences, and innovations in vocational and technical education.
