The 6th Evaluation Meeting of Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia (SEA-Teacher Project) Conducted at PSU Convention Hall, Lingayen, Pangasinan, Philippines

The SEAMEO Secretariat in collaboration with Pangasinan State University (PSU) organized the 6th Evaluation Meeting for Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia (SEA-Teacher Project) on 16 October 2018 at PSU Convention Hall, Lingayen, Pangasinan, Philippines. The objectives of the meeting were to review and evaluate the implementation of the 6th batch of SEA-Teacher project to improve future programme as well as to discuss and plan for the 7th batch which will be within 7 January – 15 February 2019 for 1 month (30 Days) (equivalent to 2 credit semester) for practicum (teaching experience) in the school network of receiving universities.

There were a total of 150 participants comprising of presidents and the management-level officials from universities and teacher education institutes in Southeast Asian countries attended the meeting. These included 1 university from Cambodia, 28 universities from Indonesia, 1 university from Malaysia, 41 universities from Philippines, and 4 universities from Thailand. The signing ceremony was held at the end of the meeting on 16 October 20178 with over 90 universities expressing their interests to participate in the 7th batch.

 

In the morning, the meeting started with an overview of SEA-Teacher Project followed by the overall programme evaluation of the 6th batch. In the afternoon, Dr Gatot Hari Priowirjanto, Director of SEAMEO Secretariat, chaired a discussion on collaboration of the 7th batch with moderation by Ms Anti Rismayanti, the Programme Officer, aiming to brainstorm the ideas of revitalizing the mechanisms of the next batch. The extension of practicum period, the visa application issues, the involvement of the international affairs department of the universities, the basic support provided by the receiving universities, the insurance coverage and the calamity emergency situation were discussed intensively in the meeting.

The programme, establishing since 2016, is for students whose majors are in Math, Science, English, Pre-school with the period of one month and is based on the mechanism of cost sharing basis. Since the 4th batch (2017) onwards, the study majors have expanded to economic education, physical education, elementary/primary, and social science. During the one-month period, the students’ roles and responsibilities are assigned weekly (observe, assist in teaching, teach and reflect). The receiving universities are required to provide faculty mentors and buddies to supervise and monitor the students throughout the practicum period.

In addition, the receiving universities are responsible for determining practicum schools that will provide opportunities for students to do assisted teaching, teach (minimum 20 hours), and other arrangement as stated in the SEA-Teacher guidelines.

Currently, there are a total of 1,354 students from 97 universities from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand participating in the project since the first batch in 2016.

The 7th evaluation meeting will be conducted in Universiti Utara Malaysia, the second week of March 2019.
