The 3rd Evaluation Meeting of Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia 28-29 March 2017 at Cebu Grand Hotel, Cebu City, Philippines

The SEAMEO Secretariat in collaboration with University of San Jose - Recoletos (USJ-R) convened the 3rd Evaluation Meeting for Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia (SEA-Teacher Project)’ on 28-29 March 2017 at Cebu Grand Hotel, Cebu City, Philippines. The meeting aims to review and evaluate the implementation of the 3rd batch of SEA-Teacher project and to discuss and plan for the 4th batch with more universities and more practicum subjects in August 2017.

A total of 46 universities from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand attended the meeting and expressed their interest to participate in the 4th batch of the SEA Teacher Project which is agreeable to be conducted during 7 August – 5 September 2017.

The SEA-Teacher Project provides opportunity for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in higher education institutions in other Southeast Asia countries. The project is for the 3rd year to 4th year pre-service student teachers whose majors are in math, science, English, pre-school and new area of subject - social sciences. The practicum period is for one month. The students’ roles and responsibilities are assigned weekly during the one-month period (observe, assist in teaching, teach and reflect). The host universities provide mentors to supervise and monitor the students throughout the practicum period. The project uses the mechanism of cost sharing basis.

During the meeting it was agreed the participants provided some improvement of the programmes in terms of screening students on their English proficiency; communication skills, provision of proper dormitory/housing for the students, developing SEAMEO Guidelines  for exchange as well as  providing evaluation standards for a betterment of the programme.
