The Republic of the Philippines, through its Department of Education, will host the two annual conferences of Southeast Asian education ministers – the 45th SEAMEO Council Conference (SEAMEC) and 5th ASEAN Meeting of Ministers of Education (ASED) on 26-29 January 2010 at the Shangri-la Hotel, Cebu, the Philippines.

More than 200 participants from 19 countries – comprising education ministers, high-level government education officials, and representatives from international organizations – from the eleven SEAMEO Member States, Associate Members, Affiliate Members, and partners are expected to attend the Conferences.

Philippine President H E Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will grace the Opening Ceremony as the Guest of Honor on 27 January 2010.

The back-to-back conferences aim to foster stronger cooperation on education among Southeast Asian countries and beyond. High on the agenda are the ten collaborative projects of the SEAMEO Member States that aim at providing education to the underserved communities in the region, integration of climate change in the school curriculum, harmonization of higher education in Southeast Asia, building capacity on maximizing the use of language in teaching, integration of ICT in teaching and learning, and strengthening visibility of SEAMEO, among others.

Registration

Delegates are requested to collect their name badges at the Registration Desk and Check-In Counter located at Jasmine Room of Shangri-la' Mactan Resort and Spa, Mactan, Cebu. Name badges must be worn and be visible at all times. These badges are required for entry into all venues and meeting areas.

44th SEAMEO Council Conference endorses landmark resolutions to further strengthen cooperation in education

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council made significant decisions that did not only mark a milestone in its history, but also guaranteed stronger cooperation in education to truly provide Education for All in the region during its 44th Annual Conference hosted by Thailand on 5-8 April 2009 at the Sheraton Grande Laguna Hotel, Phuket, Thailand.

The Ministry of Education, Malaysia, hosted the 43rd SEAMEO Council Conference in Kuala Lumpur, gathering all the education ministers and high officials of the 11 SEAMEO member states in the annual meeting that took up issues on access, equity and quality of education, among other education policies and initiatives. In coordination with the SEAMEO Secretariat, the 43rd SEAMEC was held on 13-14 March 2008 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. It was preceded by the ICT Conference and Exhibition on 10-12 March 2008 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The highlights of this year’s council conference are the signing of the renewed Agreement between SEAMEO and UNESCO, the Policy Forum led by MOE Malaysia that discussed “Bridging the Education Gap: Improving Access, Equity and Quality – Southeast Asia and Beyond,” and a discussion forum on the progress of Education for All in Southeast Asia.

The Conference of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Council (SEAMEO Council), the policy-making body of the Organization, is convened by the Secretariat some time in January through March each year. It may meet in an Extraordinary Session. It is attended by Ministers of Education of Member Countries, representatives of Associate Members, Centre and Network Directors and Coordinators, SEAMEO Secretariat officers, and observers from donor governments, foundations, international organizations and agencies.

The 42nd SEAMEC was held from 13-15 March 2007 at the Westin Hotel Nusa Dua, with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opening the conference with a keynote speech noting SEAMEO’s key role in supporting closer regional integration. The ministers proceeded to the Royal Pita Maha in Ubud on 16 March for the 2nd ASED, a conference jointly organized by the SEAMEO and ASEAN.
